Chapter 9
“Rita, I’m sorry! I was wrong! I was so wrong!”
Steve’s voice was hoarse, like a wounded beast. His trembling hand touched my face. “I regret it… Please don’t die, don’t leave me…”
He buried his head beneath the white cloth covering me, his voice choking, almost
inaudible.
“My feelings for Eve… they were
sta
obsession from my youth, something I couldn’t attain. It wasn’t love… The one I’ve always loved has been you…”
He gripped my hand, pleading over and over again. “I love seeing you lively and full of energy. Please, don’t lie there anymore,

okay?”
I sneered internally.
He was wrong!
I was never an energetic person. I just tried to be, because he liked that about me. I suppressed my true nature, trying so hard to be the cheerful woman he wanted.
I’ve never been one to be kind to anyone- Steve was the exception.
But there will be no exceptions anymore.
“Rita, I was wrong, truly wrong! I’ll never do anything to hurt you again. I will love you properly. We promised each other forever…”
He kept repeating his vows, his voice growing more desperate.

But I was already dead.
From that day on, Steve held onto my urn, never letting it out of his sight.
He refused to bury me in the cemetery or let anyone take my ashes away.
When I was alive and wanted to stay by his side, he didn’t give me the chance.
Now that I’m dead and want to leave, he won’t let me go.
What bad luck I have!
That day, my best friend, Lisa, finally couldn’t take it anymore and stormed into Steve’s study.
“Steve, stop acting like some tragic lover!”

Lisa’s eyes were red as she yelled at him. “Rita told you right away when she found out she was pregnant, and you were the one who told her to get rid of the baby. Your didn’t want her or the child to be an obstacle between you and Evelyn!”
“If it weren’t for that text message from you, she never would’ve been in that accident!”
“After it happened, she called you for help! But you refused her for Evelyn’s sake! You’re the one who killed her! You murderer!”
Steve abruptly looked up. “I never received any message from Rita, and I never told her to have an abortion!”
His eyes were bloodshot, his voice loud and terrifying, as if he was ready to tear something apart.

A watched him without emotion, only a deep sense of desolation.
Steve suddenly turned his gaze like a blade slicing through the air towards Evelyn, who stood there looking guilty. “Did you send that message to Rita using my phone? Did you make her misunderstand me?”
Evelyn’s face turned deathly pale, and she frantically shook her head. “No, I didn’t. I swear I didn’t, Steve. You have to believe me.”
“Believe you?”
Steve let out a cold laugh, his gaze turning icy. “It had to be you. After all, you’ve done things like this before.”
With every word, Evelyn’s face grew paler, until she collapsed to the ground, as if all the

strength had drained from her body.
“Send her to the slums. She’s never allowed
to return!”
Steve didn’t even glance at her, his tone devoid of emotion.
I looked at him, suddenly finding him unfamiliar and terrifying.
Once, he was so tender with me, but that tenderness had turned into a blade, cutting me piece by piece.
Evelyn cried out, her voice hoarse, “Steve, I only did it because I love you so much. I just wanted everything to go back to the way it was. I never thought that sending that message would lead to Henrieta’s death.”
But it was as if Steve didn’t hear her. He

walked to me, gently caressing my urn, his voice low and chilling. “Whatever my Rital suffered in life, you’ll suffer too–no, worse than her”
His voice was filled with hate. I knew then that he truly despised Evelyn.
But that hatred came too late, so late that I could no longer feel it.
The bodyguards dragged Evelyn away. She kept struggling and crying out, but in the end, she was pulled into the darkness.
“Rita, don’t worry. I’ll make sure Evelyn experiences a pain deeper than yours. I’ll make her wish she were dead!”
Steve’s voice echoed in my ears, icy and menacing.

In the days that followed, Steve fulfilled his promise. All his guilt toward me was channeled into a deep hatred for Evelyn.
He had her tied hand and foot, the ropes connected to the back of a car, and then he drove, dragging her along the ground.
By the time he stopped, Evelyn was a bloody mess, barely clinging to life.
But that wasn’t enough for him. He had her taken to the hospital, healed, and then the cycle began again.
I watched as Evelyn endured all this, watched as she transformed from a proud princess into a raving lunatic.
I witnessed everything, but there was no sense of satisfaction from revenge–only indifference.
