Chapter 10
“Rita, so many people came today, all here to say goodbye to you.
Steve stood in front of my gravestone, dressed in a black suit, his expression filled with grief.
I watch
him coldly. The weather was beautiful today–bright sunshine, clear skies -but inside, I felt nothing but gloom.
In life, he never gave me a grand wedding, but now in death, he wants to throw me a lavish funeral.
I couldn’t help but let out a bitter laugh. How ironic.
Steve seemed oblivious to my laughter as he

continued, speaking to himself. “Rita, I miss you.”
Watching his fake display, I felt a wave of nausea rise within me.
After the funeral, Steve drove alone to the place where I had my accident.
He lit a cigarette, took a deep drag, and slowly exhaled. Amid the swirling smoke, his face was etched with pain and regret.
“Rita, I’ve been diagnosed with stomach cancer. Do you think it’s karma?”
His voice was low, filled with despair. “When you were alive, you always took such good care of my diet, but I didn’t appreciate it. I even blamed you for being overbearing.”
“It’s only been a month since you passed,

and now I have stomach cancer. If you were still alive, you’d be nagging me about how I never took care of myself.”
I shook my head. I wouldn’t have said a thing.
He chuckled bitterly. “Of course, you wouldn’t. You probably can’t wait for me to join you!”
“Rita, I miss you. Just wait for me a little longer. I’ll be with you soon.”
His voice grew softer, fading into a sigh.
I looked at his defeated figure, feeling nothing at all.
I certainly don’t want him joining me–what bad luck that would be.

In life, I couldn’t shake him off; in death, I still had to deal with him. I bet even my path to heaven will be tainted because of him.
Steve lit another cigarette, then another, and soon the ground at his feet was littered with cigarette butts.
He stared off into the distance, at the truck speeding toward him. Closing his eyes, he rushed toward it.
“No!”
I screamed, and in the next second, I pushed him out of the way.
Steve narrowly avoided being hit by the truck. His eyes flew open, and he looked at me in disbelief.
“Rita?”

His voice trembled as he called my name, his hand reaching out to touch me, but I stepped away.
“Don’t touch me!” I shrieked, my voice sharp and piercing.
Steve’s hand froze in midair, his expression pained and conflicted.
“Steve, don’t even think about killing yourself. Don’t ever try to find us again!”
I glared at him coldly, enunciating every word. “You must live–live in agony.”
“Even when you die, it should be a death filled with suffering!”
My voice was shrill and cutting, like it was slicing through his ears.

Steve stood there, staring at me, his eyes hollow as if his soul had left him.
“Rita.”
“Don’t call me that!”
I cut him off, my voice icy. “It is disgusting.”
He muttered, “Rita, do you hate me?”
“Hate?”
I let out a bitter laugh. “You’re not even worth that!”
With that, I vanished from his sight.
Steve collapsed to the ground, his gaze empty, as if he had lost all hope.

“Rita, I was wrong. I really was…”
Π
His voice echoed down the empty road, but no reply came.
I no longer wanted to see his deceitful face. I closed my eyes and let the darkness swallow me whole.
I was slowly fading away.
I think I’m finally heading to the next world.
In that world, I hope I can live a simple and peaceful life.
And please, never let me meet Steve again.
The End.

Having been in love for two years and married for three, I finally came to the stark realization that he no longer loved me.
The latest post on his patient’s daughter’s social media was their official announcement photo. In the picture, their hands were tightly clasped, accompanied by the caption: “Mom, don’t worry, Jar will take care of me.””
Confronted with my questioning, he shrugged it off: “It’s just an announcement. Why are you making such a big deal out of it?”
His friend added, “I honestly think Gianna and Jar are the perfect match.”
I stayed composed, quietly stepping aside, gracefully giving way.
