Chapter 2
I had mentioned going to the aquarium more than once, and it wasn’t like I hadn’t been there before, but I always believed that going with him would be different. However, he always refused, citing the hospital’s busy schedule as the reason.
I never expected that today he would go out of his way to swap shifts just to be with me.
I knew this was his way of reaching out, trying to make amends.
I smiled softly and nodded.
Jarvis wasn’t fond of taking pictures, so our photos together were rare.
This time, I told myself, I would make sure

we took more.
Throughout the meal, he would occasionally glance up and ask, “How’s the taste?”
“I haven’t cooked in a while. I’m not sure if my skills have slipped.”
I finished the pasta in my mouth, ready to look up and tell him how much I enjoyed it when my phone suddenly rang.
It was mine.
I set down my fork and picked up the call. A woman’s voice burst through, trembling with urgency.
I glanced at the screen–it was Gianna.
Jarvis, sitting across from me, also set down his fork and stared at my phone, his

expression betraying the recognition of her voice.
“Elena, is Jar there? My mom isn’t feeling well. Can you have him take the call?”
Gianna’s voice was loud, almost panicked, laced with tears–she sounded utterly helpless.
But I felt no sympathy. Ignoring Jar’s growing agitation, I spoke coldly into the phone, “Jar isn’t on duty. Find another doctor”
I was about to hang up when Jarvis suddenly stood, snatching the phone from my hand.
“Gia, don’t worry. I’ll come right over. You can see Dr. Smith–he’s on shift today.”

“Forget it, I’ll call him myself. You stay in the ward and don’t panic”
He completely ignored me, speaking to Gianna as if she were a child, coaxing her with a soft, patient tone.
Once the call ended, he slammed the phone down onto the table and started heading for the door.
I stepped in front of him. “Jar, you promised we’d go to the aquarium.”
He froze, his face twisting in anger. “Now’s not the time for your tantrum! That’s my patient–it’s my responsibility! What do you know?!”
I met his eyes with a bitter smile. “Are there no other doctors at the hospital? Can’t it run without you?”

His expression faltered, and without another word, he shoved past me and stormed toward the door.
I stumbled into the corner of the table and slid to the floor, curling into myself, wrapping my arms around my knees.
This scene wasn’t unfamiliar to me. I had lost count of how many times he had abandoned me like this, even in the middle of our intimacy. A single phone call from Gianna, and he would pull away without a second thought.
Why could he always pick up her calls at those moments? Because Gianna’s ringtone. was unmistakable.
Jarvis, as a doctor, was always busy, yet he seemed to have endless time to spend with

Gianna.
Turns out, being his patient’s daughter was better than being his wife.
A bitter laugh escaped me, and tears soaked into my sleeve.
