Chapter 8
I should’ve known. Alpha Derick was even more shameless than I gave him credit for. Kneeling before me in my office, his face arranged in what I assumed was his best “romantic hero” expression, he was putting on quite the performance. I couldn’t help myself–l clapped. Slowly.
“Well, well, Alpha Derick, I drawled, smirking. “You never fail to amaze me.”
His expression darkened like a brewing storm. “What’s that supposed to mean?” he snapped, his voice taut with indignation.
I folded my arms. “It means there is no universe in which I would ever marry you. Go back to wherever you crawled out from.”

His face twisted as he shot to his feet. “Why?!” he all but shouted. “You’ve always loved me! This is what you wanted!”
“Was what I wanted,” I corrected, my voice ice–cold. “Once, maybe. But now? Just looking at you makes me want to vomit.”
His jaw clenched so tight I thought his teeth might crack. His eyes burned with fury. “Clarissa, don’t be ungrateful! Do you think I want to be here? Begging?” He sneered, spitting each word like venom. “If it weren’t for the Red Moon Pack, I wouldn’t even look at you!”
“Oh, trust me, the feeling’s mutual,” I said, grinning. “So why don’t we both stop wasting our time?”
His nostrils flared. “Beta Rebecca is ten times the woman you’ll ever be,” he hissed,

as if that would wound me. “You’re not even worth a strand of her hair!”
I arched a brow. “Ten times better, huh? Then tell me, are you sure she loves you? Are you absolutely certain she’s thrilled about carrying your pup?”
His chest puffed up. “She loves me!” he barked. “Of course she does! She-”
I lifted a finger, cutting him off. Then I pulled out my phone and hit play.
Beta Rebecca’s voice filled the room, crystal clear.
“Sixty million. Give me sixty million, and I’ll abort the pup and disappear forever. You can have Alpha Derick all to yourself.”
The color drained from his face. His hands

clenched into fists at his sides, a vein pulsing dangerously at his temple.
“Where the hell did you get that?!” he bellowed.
I held up a hand. “Shhh. Don’t interrupt.”
“I don’t love him. I only love his money. If he can’t give me a title or wealth, why should I give him a pup? With this pup, he’ll believe anything I say.”
The recording ended. Silence stretched between us.
Derick’s face turned a furious shade of red. His whole body trembled. “That… that bitch!” he roared, slamming his fist onto my desk. “I’LL KILL HER!”
“Easy there, Alpha Derick” I said, slipping my

phone back into my pocket. “You thought you had her wrapped around your finger, didn’t you? Turns out, she was playing you the entire time.”
“You knew?!” he shrieked, his voice cracking like an old man’s. “Why didn’t you tell me?!”
I shrugged. “Why should I? Your downfall isn’t my problem. If you hadn’t barged in here, I wouldn’t have even bothered showing you the recording.”
His face twisted with rage. “You… you witch!” he sputtered, pointing a shaking finger at me. “You’re just like her… laughing at me!”
I rolled my eyes. “No one’s laughing at you, Alpha Derick. You did this to yourself. Your arrogance. Your narcissism. And now? You’re paying the price.”

“You fucking bitch!”
I leaned forward slightly, locking eyes with him. “If I were you, I’d stop yelling and start running home. Who knows? By now, Beta Rebecca’s probably packed up and disappeared–with all your money.”
He froze. Then, without another word, he spun on his heel and bolted out of my office.
I couldn’t help myself. Grabbing my keys, I followed. This was going to be good.
By the time I arrived at his mansion, Derick was in full meltdown mode, tearing through the place like a madman. Furniture shattered. Glass rained down. His parents hovered helplessly, trying–and failing–to calm him.
“She’s gone! That bitch is gone!” he

screamed, hurling a lamp against the wall. “I’LL KILL HER!”
Outside, the neighbors gathered, murmuring among themselves.
“Did she really run off?”
“But she’s pregnant…”
“Yeah, and I bet she’s halfway to some tropical island with all his money by now.”
Leaning against my car, arms crossed, I watched the chaos unfold, a smug smile tugging at my lips.
Checkmate, Beta Rebecca.
And Alpha–Derick? He was finally getting exactly what he deserved.
