Chapter 226: An Ex–Husband Is Just Dead Weight
Cassius gave her shoulder a light pat.
Gemma’s tears only fell harder.
He wanted to wipe them away, but his hands were dirty.
It didn’t feel right.
Robin arrived with his team.
Seeing that everything was under control, he didn’t waste a second–just gestured for his men to slap handcuffs on everyone.
There were too many pregnant women here. He immediately called in helicopters for medical evacuation, hoping to get them to a hospital as fast as possible.
Robin grabbed the blond man. To keep him from passing out from blood loss, Gemma even gave him emergency treatment.
Long story short, interrogating him wouldn’t be a problem.
The guy tried to fake unconsciousness.
Gemma gave him a free crash course on just how skilled doctors were at causing pain without doing any permanent damage.
It wasn’t about how much it hurt. It was about how much more it could hurt.
The man broke, wailing like a child.
Robin sneered.
“You think staying quiet means I don’t know what you’re up to?”
“Your contact outside is Harvey Read, isn’t it? He already spilled everything. Otherwise, how do you think I found this place?”
Lucas‘ eyes widened in shock.
Gemma’s heart, though, sanık like a stone.
Harvey and Brian were half–brothers.
If Harvey, a Read family member, was involved in something this big.. what about Brian?
Her chest tightened.
Robin kept going.
“Yeah, you’d better keep your mouth shut–might even get a lighter‘ sentence that way.”
‘Oh, by the way, that woman with Harvey? We have her, too. She begged me to find you. Said a piece of scum like you should just be put down on
the spot.
Lucas looked utterly shaken.
But Robin’s words shattered whatever defenses he had left.
Seizing the moment, Robin pressed harder, using every interrogation trick in the book. Finally, Lucas cracked.
“My name is Lucas. I run this base.”
Robin’s expression darkened. “Don’t be vague. From the beginning. Everything.”
Lucas gave a brief rundown,
Turns out, they were experimenting with gene sequencing and genetic modification.
Normally, research like this was done on mice or monkeys. But the genetic gap was too wide. The data wasn’t accurate enough.
So, they took a risk. They started using human test subjects.
This kind of research was strictly banned everywhere.
To make it work, they needed a remote, hidden location.
After searching for the perfect spot, Lucas chose this village
First, it was the closest mountain village to N.L. City.
Second, it was surrounded by mountains–good terrain, zero chance of getting caught.
Obviously, they couldn’t operate in the open. So, they built underground labs.
Funny thing–while digging, the villagers accidentally unearthed an ancient tomb.
They simply converted it into their lab.
At first, they just paid the village chief to let them study the locals.
But over time, they realized the villagers were mostly old. The data was too limited.
So, they upped the payment and expanded to kids and the elderly.

Then, one day, the village chief’s son brought home a pregnant woman.
And that’s when they had their brilliant idea.
A human’s genetic code is set from the moment of fertilization.
But since an embryo hasn’t developed yet, altering genes at that stage is much easier.
So, their current focus? Studying fetuses.
Every stage of fetal development had to be analyzed.
Gemma finally understood.
No wonder those men held back when they realized she was pregnant.
Robin, on the other hand, wasn’t interested in revelations. He kicked Lucas–hard.
“You little bastard. Still holding back on me?”
He pulled out a hairpin they’d found in the cave,
“You were only experimenting on villagers?”
Lucas‘ face went ghostly pale.
“This village shares the same bloodline. Limited genetic diversity. Of course, we had to expand our database,”
He said it so matter–of–factly.
Like every kidnapped outsider was just… fair game.
“You sick bastard.”
Gemma clenched her fists, barely stopping herself from smashing his face in.
Lucas lifted his head. “I’ve told you everything. I want to see Kendall. Let me see her!”
Kendall–the woman Robin had mentioned earlier.
Robin’s expression was ice cold. “Oh, don’t worry. You will see her.”
On the day of your trial.
“The equipment–secure everything,” Robin ordered his men.
“Yes, sir!”
The officers handled the scene with extreme caution. They were even collecting hair samples.
Gemma, caught up in the moment, started treating the pregnant women.
By the time they finished, dawn was breaking.
The three of them stepped outside to catch their breath.
Gemma’s mind was a mess.
When she first arrived, she thought the missing villagers had either left willingly or gone off to work.
And the kids? She assumed they’d been sent away for school.
Who would’ve thought…
She sighed.
No wonder Drogo left this village.
That lazy bum wouldn’t lift a finger unless his life was on the line. For him to leave? It had to be bad.
“Dr. Kelestine, take Cassius for a walk. I need a smoke.”
Robin looked on edge.
So many pregnant women. Missing research data. He had no idea how he was even going to write this report.
“You’d better let Lucas go. Otherwise, I can’t guarantee he’ll live much longer.”
Robin had just flicked open his lighter when he saw a group of men rushing toward them.
Instinct kicked in–he immediately shielded Cassius and Gemma.
The sky was turning pale with morning light.
Gemma’s eyes locked onto the man leading the group.
Humphrey Wayne!
Cali’s younger brother.
An even bigger leech than Drogo.
“Humphrey, what the hell are you doing?”
Humphrey smiled. Then, with a snap of his fingers, a hostage was dragged forward.
