Chapter 231: Gemma, Please Help Me
Gemma never doubted Cassius‘ ability.
If he wanted to dig up the truth, there was no way he wouldn’t find it.
“Yeah, look into this properly. Cassius, I really hope what they said is true!”
She needed to know–was her family still out there?
And if they were, why had they abandoned her?
Had she been lost by accident, or had they deliberately thrown her away?
If it was the first, she’d go find them.
If it was the second… well, then it was better to leave the past in the past.
Robin had been about to say everything was handled and they could leave.
But then he heard what Gemma said.
So… she wasn’t actually a Kelestine.,
That wasn’t shocking
Cops
But!
saw cases like this all the time.
What did blow his mind-
Gemma actually dared to talk to Cass like that?! And she was straight–up ordering him around!
Robin had known Cass his whole life. Even as his childhood best friend, if he ever needed Cass‘ help, he had to wait for Cass to be in the right mood.
Sometimes, it took begging–practically getting on his knees–just to get Cassius to lift a finger.
So he fully expected Cass to snap and tell Gemma to get lost. Instead, Cassius just nodded.
“Okay.”
And his voice was so damn gentle, like he was afraid speaking too loudly might scare her off.
Robin had seen all kinds of horrifying things in that filthy village, and none of it had shaken him.
But this? This rattled him to his core.
This was Mr. Cassius Raven!
The man who ruled N.L. City. The one whose name alone struck fear across the country.
And yet…
Robin’s entire world came crashing down.
“Cass.”
He had to say something.
He had to make sure this was still the same guy he’d known all these years.
Cassius turned around, and in an instant, his usual cold, untouchable demeanor was back.
The air around him seemed to drop ten degrees, making it impossible to get close.
Robin, ….
Yeah.
The difference was brutal.
A knife straight to the heart.
“You done?”
Cassius completely ignored the look on Robin’s face.
Robin answered, “…Yeah, all set. We can go.”
‘Get a car ready. I’m taking Gemma first.”
Robin had no objections. After all, everyone here had been arranged by Cassius.
Finding a car was easy.
Cassius turned back to Gemma.
He took off his jacket and held it out to her.
“The mountain wind’s cold. Wear this.”

Gemma took it, draping it over her shoulders
The crisp scent of cedar surrounded her instantly.
A quiet land of security.
Thanks
Cassius walked ahead, and she followed.
His voice drifted back to her on the wind.
“What are you thanking me for?”
She answered without thinking.
“For handling the village, for investigating my past..
And for the jacket.
Cassius opened the car door.
Gemma had long since gotten used to this–she slid in without hesitation.
Cassius shut the door for her before heading to the driver’s seat.
Only after starting the car did he speak again.
“Noah texted earlier. Candy’s getting vaccinated tomorrow. He wants you there.”
“Of course!” Gemma perked up immediately.
Just thinking about that little puppy made her heart melt.
Marcus stood frozen, watching their car disappear into the distance.
So full of life.
It had been so, so long since he’d seen Gemma like this.
She wasn’t anything like the woman she’d been in their marriage.
It was like she’d become someone else entirely.
If he didn’t believe in science, he might’ve thought someone had taken over her body.
Robin walked up.
“Mr. Wilson, you need to cooperate with our investigation.”
Marcus finally tore his gaze away.
“Alright.”
He and Humphrey had both been present.
That alone made them suspects.
Robin asked, “You were Ms. Kelestine’s ex–husband. You must know a lot about where she grew up, right?”
A sharp pain stabbed through Marcus‘ heart.
He didn’t.
Or rather, Gemma had told him before, but he never listened.
Because in his mind,
He had never once thought of her family as his family.
So when she said she didn’t want to go back, he hadn’t argued.
Robin frowned at his silence.
“Still refusing to cooperate? No problem, we can talk at the station.”
Marcus snapped back to reality and quickly shook his head.
“That’s not what I meant.”
Some things… he just didn’t know how to explain.
N.L.. City.
The village case was compiled and sent up.
Soon, a team of experts joined the investigation.
Three days of intense work-
And they dug up a lot.

Gemma was called to the police station.
According to Robin, she’d get the chance to meet someone from the Kelestine family and get some answers.
Cassius had sent people out to investigate, but even now, they still didn’t have a definite conclusion.
So it was better for Gemma to start looking for clues herself.
She took time off work and rushed over–only to run into Brian as she left the hospital.
He was about to drive off when he spotted her. Rolling down the window, he called out.
Once they realized they were headed to the same place, she hitched a ride.
“You going to report something?”
She asked from the backseat.
Brian sighed and kept his eyes on the road.
“No. It’s the Read family. Something happened. One of them is at the station. I called a lawyer–I’m going to see what’s going on.”
Gemma nodded.
Now was the time to decide whether to kick them while they were down or offer a helping hand.
She wouldn’t pry, but Brian seemed eager to vent.
So as he drove, he spoke.
“Harvey… that idiot actually committed a crime.”
Gemma blinked in surprise.
Sure, Harvey had lost last time, but he was still part of the Read family. He’d gotten his fair share.
Even if he wasn’t as powerful as before, he was still a CEO of a small company.
As long as he didn’t blow his money on gambling, women, and booze, he should have been fine.
So why?
“Did he do it just to come after me again?”
Brian shook his head.
“I don’t know. But I doubt this just started recently. My guess? Someone set him up.”
Gemma raised a brow. “Didn’t expect you to defend him.”
Brian gave a tired smile. “I have no choice. He may be cut off, but he’s still a Read. I can’t just sit back and watch.”
His father was still around.
Even if the old man had stepped away from the company, he still had influence.
If Brian pushed too hard, he might not come out unscathed either.
So instead-
He’d use this to get leverage over Harvey. Turn him into a pawn.
“Still, he committed a crime.”
Gemma didn’t like getting involved in other people’s messes.
But if Harvey was guilty, and Brian was trying to save him, then what about the victims?
Who would stand up for them?
Brian let out a long sigh. “Gemma… if I ask for your help-
