Chapter 233: A Glimpse into Gemma’s Past
There were a lot of photos.
Drogo looked thinner.
And it was obvious–someone was controlling him.
That someone was most likely Gemima.
Dan’s glare turned even more vicious.
“I should’ve never taken you in, you little bitch!”
Gemina immediately put away her phone.
“You’ll pay for what you just said–tenfold, a hundredfold. And Drogo will be the one to suffer for it
Dan’s face turned purple, like a rooster suddenly strangled mid–crow,
Gemma, on the other hand, stayed calm.
He’d already lost his cool once. Now he was cracking again. His defenses were crumbling
Silence stretched.
Dan’s aggression slowly deflated.
Then, finally, he spoke.
“If I tell you everything… can you promise I won’t die?”
Gemma shook her head.
“No.”
Dan,
“You know exactly what you’ve done.” Her voice was flat, emotionless.
Dan lowered his head.
“Your brother… He had nothing to do with any of this. You have to let him go.”
Gemma leaned back in her chair.
“If he’s innocent, I won’t touch him. I only give you that,”
Dan took a deep breath.
“How do I know I can trust you?“–
Gemma was matter–of–fact, “You can’t. But right now, you don’t have any other choice.”
“In this city, I’m the only person who might cut Drogo some slack.”
Drogo didn’t think like a normal person. The way he did things could shatter everything someone believed in.
It wouldn’t take long before he became completely outcast.
And with the village sealed off, he couldn’t go back and live off scraps either.
His only fate here was rejection, disgust, and loneliness.
But if someone took care of him, things could be different.
At the very least, he could live out his days with some dignity.
Maybe Dan finally came to terms with it. He rubbed his temples, then started talking,
Gemma had been found in the mountains.
Miriam was out gathering fruits when she heard crying. At first, she ignored it. But the sound got on her nerves, so she brought people to check
A baby lay wrapped in a bundle, crying at the top of its lungs.
The fabric was expensive. The village chief guessed it belonged to a rich family.
But after a few days, no one came looking.
And the baby wouldn’t stop wailing. It drove him crazy.
People were struggling just to feed their own kids–who had the energy to take in another mouth?
The situation hit a dead end.
Then, by sheer coincidence, a Gypsy passed through the village and stopped at the chief’s house for water.
He saw the baby and froze.

“The child’s future is Vry he said Bound for caber great wealth or power
The village chiefs eyes lit up “Then how do we find the child’s real mi
The Gypsy shook his head
“This child is Exted to be alone. Even if you return them, something will go wrong again. Theyre better off staying here
But no one in the village wanted to raise them
So the chief begged the Gypay to read the child’s fate who would be the best guanchan
He pousted to the Kelestines
So Dan and Miriam were summoned.
They were young, childless
They had no interest in raising a stranger’s baby
Then the Gypsy started talking about their family, their ancestors, even secrets no one should’ve known.
He told them they were destined to be childless. But Gemuna–Gemmas fate included a male sibling.
The chief threw in a few incentives, and before Dan knew what was happening, he had a baby in his arms.
Later, Drogo was born. And from then on, they blindly believed every word the Gypsy had said.
Gemma grew up in Kelestine.
But she was never really one of them. She was never treated like family
Dan finished with a shrug.
“That bundle you were wrapped in? Your mom tore it up to make clothes for Drogo. There was nothing inside it that could prove who you were.‘
“We really have no idea whose kid you are.”
Gemma listened to the whole thing, her face calm.
But her fists were clenched tight.
“So was I abandoned? Or just lost?”
Dan had expected her to ask something else. Maybe about the village’s… less than legal activities.
Not this. Boring question.
“How the hell should I know?” he muttered, clearly annoyed.
He paused, then seemed to realize his attitude might piss her off.
He quickly added.
I really don’t know. Our village is remote. Strangers don’t just wander in
“Unless they got lost.”
“And with all the wild animals in the mountains… who knows?”
Maybe someone got lost in the mountains, ran into a beast, and left the baby behind in a desperate bid to lure the creature away.
Or maybe they realized they’d never make it out alive with a baby in tow… and chose to abandon….
Either way, if Gemma wanted answers, she’d have to find them herself.
She didn’t ask anything else.
As for the crimes.. that was Robin’s job to deal with.
She stepped out of the room, but instead of feeling relieved, she felt heavier.
Before coming here, she’d been anxious.
She had already worked with the police to run a DNA test against the people of Kelestine.
The results weren’t out yet. But she had been praying–praying she wasn’t related to them.
So on the way here, she’d been excited.
And now that she had her answer. She realized she had only scratched the surface.
A bigger mystery was waiting.
She suddenly thought of Bradley Jennings.
That nosy, sarcastic celebrity who always had something to say.
She pulled out her phone and sent a message.
[Didn’t you say you’d get the DNA test done? Where’s your guy?]
No response.
Guess she’d have to wait.
