Chapter 247: Do I Need to Check the Calendar Before Insulting You?
Elizabeth let out a long sigh.
“I really didn’t expect Keagan to hang himself on a single tree like this.”
“Honestly, I thought–he’s my son. If he realized his mistake, even though he couldn’t win Susie’s family back, I’d still set him up with a small company so he’d never have to worry about money.”
She sighed again.
Gemma gently patted her back.
“You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink.”
“Everyone makes their own choices. They say every generation has its own fate–no need to stress over it.”
Elizabeth understood that.
But understanding something and accepting it when it’s happening to you were two very different things.
She let out another deep sigh.
“Gem, at the end of the day, marrying the right family makes all the difference.”
“If you don’t, even a noblewoman can end up a Cinderella.”
Gemma knew exactly what she meant.
She placed a hand over Elizabeth’s.
“I know.”
“No, you don’t!”
Elizabeth, who had just been looking dejected, suddenly perked up, her eyes shining with excitement.
“Cass is a total catch right now!”
“Think about it–his scummy father and stepmother are out of the picture. His scheming half–brother? No real threat.”
“The entire Raven family empire is in his hands.”
“If you married him, you wouldn’t have to deal with annoying in–laws. All you’d have to do is be happy every day.”
“That’s what i call a great investment!”
Gemma: “…”
So this was why she got invited here today?
“Elizabeth, um, do you want me to schedule you a checkup?”
Elizabeth beamed. “I’m perfectly fine! In fact, if you and Cass got together, I’d even help babysit your kids!”
Gemma: “….” Yeah, this conversation was going nowhere.
“Would you like some tea? I’ve been learning how to make it–want to try?”
She quickly changed the subject.
Though her mind was a tangled mess.
She still had a lawsuit with Marcus. A whole pile of unfinished business.
On the surface, she was free.
But she knew better–she was like a kite, and whoever held the string would only get dragged down with her.
Besides-
Cassius had way bigger things to worry about.
From what Shawn had said, Esapring Island was making all sorts of moves lately, yet they still couldn’t pinpoint its location.
Even some lab data had been acting up.
Cassius carried the weight of too many people’s futures.
To him, marriage was probably the least important thing in his life..
But Elizabeth wasn’t giving up.
“Forget the tea. Let’s talk about something else–what do you think of Cass?”
Gemma blinked.
What did she think of him?
Well, he was a great partner. They worked well together.

She felt comfortable around him.
Oh, and he had a fantastic body. And he was a very obedient patient.
She smiled awkwardly, thinking of brushing it off.
But then she realized-
If she dodged the question, Elizabeth would just keep bringing it up.
Might as well settle it once and for all.
After a pause, she answered seriously.
“Elizabeth, I think marriage is just karma tailor–made for each person by fate.”
“You know I just got divorced–I haven’t even fully put the past behind me.”
“I really don’t want to jump into another relationship so soon.”
She hesitated, then added, a little cynically-
“Even if I do move on one day and start dating again, I’d never get married.”
Elizabeth froze.
She stared at Gemma, stunned.
She couldn’t understand–why did someone so young sound so… dead inside when it came to marriage? She
Even more jaded than her, an old woman.
“Alright, alright, let’s drop it,” Elizabeth finally said, this time changing the subject herself.
Gemma exhaled in relief.
Stepping out of Beasleys, she spotted Yvonne’s car still parked there.
The window slowly rolled down.
Kaiya’s perfectly made–up face appeared.
“Dr. Kelestine, what a coincidence,” Kaiya said, her tone smug.
Gone was the sweet, delicate act from before.
Her gaze scanned Gemma with open disdain.
‘You’ve got some skills, huh? Even managed to cozy up to Elizabeth Beasley.”
To her, Gemma was just some surgeon.
She only got Cassius’s favor because she happened to save Noah, his precious godson.
Pure dumb luck.
If another doctor had been on that plane, the result would’ve been the same.
Cassius had plenty of power and money to spare–of course he’d reward her.
But getting in with Cassius’s aunt? That took real talent.
Kaiya had just dealt with Elizabeth herself and found her sharp and shrewd. The woman talked a lot but never said anything useful.
A total waste of her time.
And clearly, Elizabeth wasn’t the type to warm up to outsiders easily.
Without some tricks up her sleeve, there was no way Gemma could’ve won her over.
Unless, of course, it was just because Elizabeth liked Noah.
Gemma hadn’t expected them to still be here.
She’d only been inside for an hour.
If they waited any longer, they might as well set up camp.
“You’ve got skills too, she shot back. “Couldn’t get what you wanted, so now you’re just barking at random people.”
Kaiya’s face darkened instantly, “You dare insult me?”
Born into luxury, she was used to people catering to her every whim.
And now, some nobody had the audacity to humiliate her?
Unacceptable.
Gemma raised a brow. “What, do I need to check the calendar before insulting you?”
“Should I consult the almanac and pick an auspicious time first?”
Kaiya’s hand shot up.
Gemma didn’t flinch.

She knew Kaiya wouldn’t dare.
Sure enough-
Yvonne bolted out of the car, catching Kaiya’s wrist before she could strike.
“Dr. Kelestine, we waited for you because we’re genuinely interested in working together. No need to let a few words ruin things, don’t you think?”
Gemma smiled faintly. “You seem reasonable–why don’t you apologize on her behalf, then?”
Kaiya’s voice turned ice–cold. “Gemma, don’t push your luck.”
Gemma kept her expression perfectly pleasant.
“You sure hand out a lot of luck‘ to people. Miss Luck?”
Kaiya was fuming, her ears practically steaming.
Her hand rose again.
If she didn’t put Gemma in her place, she wasn’t Kaiya Dolton!
But once again-
Yvonne stopped her.
“Kaiya, calm down. If you want someone to cooperate, beating them into submission isn’t the way.”
