Chapter 254: She Has Always Walked Toward Mr. Cassius
“Gemma, aren’t you going to the surgical ward?”
Brian caught up to her, spotting an ambulance up ahead. For a second, he thought it was for some critical patient.
But if that were the case, why hadn’t he been notified?
Gemma turned her head, a little surprised.
“Surgical ward? I haven’t been in surgery for ages. And tonight, I don’t exactly have time for a reunion.”
Brian paused for a moment.
That was supposed to be a hint-
Reminding her who else might be in the surgical ward.
But Gemma played dumb like a pro.
Then again, she’d been dead silent about this whole family drama.
Clearly, she didn’t want anyone to know until everything was settled.
Brian got it.
With a family as big as the Doltons, one wrong rumor could mess up everything.
So he stepped a little closer, lowering his voice.
“Your Uncle Ash and your cousin are both here.”
“I got them a VIP suite for overnight observation. If nothing serious comes up, they’ll be discharged tomorrow.”
Gemma, “???”
Where was this coming from?
For a second, she didn’t even process what he was saying.
Then, luckily, her brain kicked into gear.
“So what ur saying is… you only gave them special treatment because of me?”
Brian neither confirmed nor denied it.
But let’s be real–he did it for her.
If he could help her smooth things over with her family, it was worth it.
Gemma, …Have you considered the possibility that they have nothing to do with me?”
Brian, “???”
“Brian.” Gemma gave him a long, meaningful look, exhaled, and then said, “Scammers are everywhere these days.
Maybe you should download an anti–fraud app.”
With that, she turned to leave. The ambulance was prepped and ready to go.
Brian grabbed herarm.
“Gemma, you don’t have to hide this from me. I know something’s wrong with your family situation. I can talk to the Doltons for you, help smooth things out.”
Gemma was completely baffled by his logic.
Then again…
Why even bother explaining?
Some paths just don’t lead to the same destination.
“No need. I have nothing to do with the Doltons, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.”
“As for this so–called uncle of mine…”
She let out a laugh, cold and sharp. “My mother disappeared years ago, and they never really tried to find her. That kind of uncle‘? No thanks.”
“Otherwise, I’d be scared to step outside–might get struck by lightning.”
And with that, she walked away, not giving Brian a chance to stop her.
He watched the ambulance speed off, still trying to process what just happened.
He really didn’t get her.
Back then, he’d been the kid left on the outside too.
If Harvey’s mother hadn’t passed away, he and his mom never would’ve made it back into the Read family.

Chapter 254: She Has Always Walked Toward Mr. Cassius
Once, he’d thought pride was enough, that as long as he stayed true to himself, nothing else mattered.
But after stepping into the Read family’s world, he finally understood what power could do.
Only a fool would turn their back on that.
Gemma was still young. She didn’t get it yet.
The moment she experienced life as a true Dolton heiress, she’d understand.
Oh well.
For now, she was busy saving lives. He’d handle the Doltons for her–keep them steady until she was ready.
With that, he turned and headed upstairs.
Inside the hospital room, three people were waiting for news.
As soon as Brian walked in, all eyes were on him.
“You’re patients. Get some rest. He looked at Kaiya.
“Especially you. Your bloodwork showed mild anemia. We’ll run more tests tomorrow.”
Kaiya nodded obediently.
“Okay, Brian. But… why didn’t Gemina come with you? Is she still mad at me?”
Brian waved a hand dismissively.
“Family doesn’t stay mad forever. I ran into her just now–she had to transfer a patient, so she left with the ambulance.”
Ashton’s expression darkened.
“One patient? And she had to handle it herself? Does she not realize her own sister is in a hospital bed?”
Brian kept his voice calm. “You misunderstand, Mr. Dolton. Gemma’s a doctor. Saving lives comes first.”
Ashton let out a cold scoff.
“I’ll talk to the director tomorrow. She doesn’t need to be dealing with this nonsense.”
Brian nodded. “I’ll make the introduction.”
Meanwhile, Gemma sneezed. Several times.
Someone was definitely talking about her behind her back.
At least her patient was stable. Otherwise, these sneezes would’ve seriously gotten in the way.
The ambulance soon arrived at the lab. The team carefully transferred the patient into a nearby clinic.
Calling it a “clinic” didn’t do it justice–it was fully equipped to hospital standards.
More like a private medical lab.
Gemma hooked the child up to various monitors. The signs were promising.
No time to waste. She left,a team to keep watch and headed straight into the lab.
Cassius had already pulled strings to get her access to past research, but the Chavez kid’s condition needed an upgraded treatment.

Rubbing her eyes, she slipped into her protective gear.
The lab was brightly lit, a handful of researchers inside. Trying. Failing. Trying again.
Focused.
Relentless.
Dedicated.
Gemma respected them.
She jumped right in.
By the time they made a breakthrough, it was already noon the next day.
Exhaustion hit them all at once.
But seeing the drug finally work? Adrenaline kicked right back in. They wanted to keep going.
Gemma insisted on rest. At least a shift rotation. They’d burn out otherwise.
Not because she was lazy, but because a foggy brain led to wasted time.
In the end, half the team went to rest.
The core researchers stayed, determined to see this through.
“Dr. Kelestine, Mr. Cassius sent food.”
Brooke’s voice came through the intercom.
