Chapter 18 Why the Rush to Divorce?
Elizabeth rolled her eyes and let out a silent snort.
Who cared if she took over The Jones Group? It had zilch to do with these folks.
And borrowing money from Michael was never on her agenda.

She wanted to keep Michael at arm’s length. Post–divorce, she hoped they’d never cross paths again. So she wouldn’t do that.
Swallowing her irritation, she declared, “William, Karen, you’re way off base. Michael’s not gonna lend me a dime. We’re about to split, remember?”
William and Karen visibly relaxed at her words.
At the dining table, Mary grabbed Elizabeth’s hand and grinned, “Elizabeth, if you had a kid with Michael, he’d totally help you out with cash. Then you could save your dad’s company, right?”
Elizabeth mulled it over.
Her eyes drifted to Michael across the table.
He was busy chowing down.
Sitting so far away, he probably missed Mary’s comment.
Elizabeth gently touched her lower abdomen.
She’d never use her kid as a bargaining chip with Michael.
She’d do everything she could to save Robert’s company on her own.
Her children’s lives shouldn’t be involved in her current mess.
After lunch, Elizabeth and Michael left the old mansion.
In the car, they sat in the back seat quietly.
The silence was thick and heavy.
“Elizabeth, don’t even think about having my kid. I’m warning you. Even if you do, I’ll strangle him myself.” Michael’s voice–cur through the quiet like a knife.
His tone was icy, like a winter chill.
His words were like daggers, stabbing her heart.
Even with the heater on, Elizabeth shivered. She hugged herself tighter.
“Why?” Elizabeth asked, her voice shaky, “Michael, even if you don’t want me to have your kid, you don’t have to be so cruel.
Elizabeth pulled her coat tighter, and under it’s cover, the gently patted her lower abdomen and thought to herself, Babies, don’t listen to what Michael sald. I love you so much. Elizabeth closed her eyes and silently repeated in her heart.

It was always said that babies in the womb could sense things.
They could feel love and hate.
She was terrified Michael’s harsh words would scare the babies inside her.
Michael turned to her, his voice still cold, “I’m warning you, don’t get any ideas.”
Elizabeth ignored him. She felt like she was drowning in a freezing pool.
Just this morning, she had started to see him differently.
She must’ve been out of her mind.
Seeing Elizabeth lost in thought, Michael raised an eyebrow, “Elizabeth, you don’t really want to have my kid, do you?”
Elizabeth rolled her eyes again, remained silent, and turned to stare out the window.
“I’m serious. I mean it.” Michael turned to look out the window on his side.
Elizabeth turned away, her voice cool and detached, “Michael, don’t worry. Even if you wanted me to have your kid, I wouldn’t. I know you hate me, but feeling’s mutual. Let’s just get this divorce over with. Now that Mary’s out of the hospital, there’s nothing holding you back, right?”
She thought, by the time she had the babies, she’d be long divorced from Michael.
Then, she’d take the kids far away to keep the Thomas Family from them in case Michael regretted it.
But judging by how much he hated kids, he probably wouldn’t even bother.
Then she could live peacefully with the kids.
A smile crept on Elizabeth’s face as she thought of living with Nancy and having her babies surrounded by her loved ones.
Michael jerked his head, doubt flickering in his eyes. He frowned slightly and glanced at her.
“Why are you in such a rush to get divorced? Are you having another man?” His voice dripped with anger by the end.
Elizabeth frowned, brooding on what he meant.
Then the name, Anthony, hit her. Was he talking about Anthony?
Elizabeth rolled her eyes internally.
She wanted her own life, not one with Authony.
Flizabeth voored, Michael, let me make it clear. Since you want a divorce, let’s not drag it out. Whether I want to be with another then is time at your business. This marriage was a mistake from the tart. We need to cut our losses and can’t go further

If Michael noticed, she feared she wouldn’t be able to protect the kids.
Thinking of this, Elizabeth sneaked a glance at Michael beside her.
Just in time to catch his cold stare.
“Elizabeth, are you hiding something from me?” he asked.

Her heart skipped a beat, and she said, “I just don’t want to stay with you. You should know how miserable I am being with you.”
Michael sneered, “I really didn’t see it. All I saw was you doing whatever you wanted at home. Slamming doors, smashing bottles. That’s your idea of being miserable? You’re already letting it all out, aren’t you?” He turned away again.
Hearing him mention that expensive bottle of wine, Elizabeth felt a gang of guilt, and her words lost their edge, “I lost it that tim I’m usually pretty chill. That day, I was just pushed to the limit.”
A brief silence filled the car.
Michael looked down at his fingers.
