Chapter 294: The Mute Boy from Back Then
Octavia didn’t react.
She had originally refused to work with Marcus because Margaret had messed up her plans.
But after returning to the Merrick family, things shifted again, leaving her no choice but to approach Marcus once more.
She thought it would take multiple rounds of negotiations, but to her surprise, he agreed immediately.
Just like that, their deal was sealed.
But she wasn’t planning a formal engagement banquet just yet.
The Merrick family was still watching.
She was waiting for them to make a move.
Now that Mabel had walked right into the fire, those people were probably already aware of what was happening.
She wanted to use Mabel. And she had a feeling those people did too.
Things were getting more and more interesting.
“What the hell are you smiling about?”
Mabel had assumed the silence meant fear.
But when she looked up, she saw Octavia grinning at her–like she’d just watched a circus monkey perform.
Mabel’s face instantly darkened.
She was so humiliated, she momentarily forgot to be afraid.
Octavia snapped out of her thoughts.
“Believe what you want, but I genuinely want to keep your child.”
“For me, it’s… a supplement.”
Mabel’s eyes widened in shock.
“W–What are you talking about?”
A supplement?
She’s not some kind of psycho who eats people, is she?!
Octavia waved a hand dismissively. “Alright, you can go now. I’ll talk to Marcus about your situation.”
Mabel immediately tensed.
“You two are plotting to make me lose the baby!”
“I’m warning you–it’s not happening. No way in hell!”
Octavia let out a sigh.
“I never lie. I won’t hurt you, and I actually like your child. You can relax.“,
As soon as she finished speaking, her assistant stepped forward and grabbed Mabel’s arm.
“Ms. Mabel, please head back.”
Mabel was dragged outside, looking utterly disheveled.
The assistant blocked the office door, leaving her no choice but to leave.
She hadn’t walked far when she bumped into someone.
“Are you alright?”
A hand reached out to steady her.
She froze and looked up.
The man in front of her was older, but his manner was refined, his presence commanding.
He was even more handsome than Marcus.
Just as she was about to speak, the assistant came rushing over with a nervous smile.
“Mr. Dolton! I’m so sorry for the delay–I should’ve come to greet you earlier.”
Jarrett smiled slightly.
“It’s fine. Where’s Ms. Merrick?”
The assistant quickly stepped aside.
“She’s in the office. This way, please.”

Jarrett glanced at Mabel once more before heading inside.
Mabel’s heart pounded.
She barely stopped herself from gasping out loud.
His presence was overwhelming.
It took her a while to regain her composure.
As the assistant escorted her out, she cautiously asked about his identity.
At first, the assistant hesitated.
But when Mabel slipped a gold ring into her palm, she finally relented, giving a brief introduction.
Mabel quickly connected the dots.
Lately, Margaret had been constantly talking about the Dolton family–with nothing but admiration in her tone.
And this man, Jarrett, was the second son of the Dolton family. He controlled two–thirds of their wealth.
A man with real power.
And… he was a lawyer.
A plan started forming in her mind.
“Mabel!”
Marcus stormed over, his face thunderous as he spotted her standing outside the Merrick family’s office building.
He grabbed her wrist.
“Let’s go. Stop embarrassing yourself here.”
Mabel shook him off, her expression nowhere near as eager as before.
“I get it. Now let go.”
Her tone was impatient.
Marcus was taken aback.
“You….”
“What? Didn’t you say you didn’t want me bothering you? Now that I’m giving you space, why do you still look so pissed?”
She rolled her eyes, looking completely fed up with him.
Marcus was shocked at first, but then… an unexpected wave of excitement hit him.
“Wait… does that mean you’re finally considering getting rid of the baby?”
Mabel hadn’t secured a connection with the Dolton family yet, so she wasn’t about to make any drastic moves.
“It’s my child, and I’m keeping it. If you don’t want to be involved, I’ll raise them myself.”
Marcus’s face darkened instantly.
Right now, Mabel wasn’t showing yet, so it was easy to hide.
But what about later, when her stomach got bigger?
Gemma was a doctor–there was no way to keep this a secret.
‘Marcus, if you don’t want to return to the main house, fine. But I’m still the mother of your child. Make sure those servants understand who’s in
charge.”
With that, she hailed a cab and left.
Marcus stood frozen for a moment.
Her attitude had changed so much, he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was up.
He ended up calling home.
Margaret sounded irritated.
“Max, stay out of this. That child is my grandchild–I won’t just ignore it.”
Only then did Marcus relax and hang up.
He glanced at the Merrick family’s office building but didn’t feel like going in to see Octavia.
Gemma took Noah to the movies.
She bought two tickets, but when they sat down, she noticed an empty seat beside them.
Not long after, Cassius arrived
“Why didn’t you tell me beforehand?”

Gemma felt awkward. If she’d known he was coming, she would’ve bought three tickets from the start.
Now it looked like she was cheap.
So embarrassing.
Noah pouted.
“Ugh, wherever I go, Uncle Cass follows. So annoying.”
Cassius’s deep voice rumbled.
“That new Transformers figure must be annoying too, then.”
Noah immediately switched sides.
“Uncle Cass, you’re the best! We were totally waiting for you!”
Gemma, “…”
The theater dimmed as the movie started.
Then, a low voice reached her ear.
“I came just for you.”
Gemma’s heart skipped a beat.
She looked down, her cheeks burning.
“Must be a hell of a movie… to make you leave behind a billion–dollar empire.”
Cassius, “…”
The film was simple.
It was about childhood sweethearts who got separated and spent years trying to find each other again.
At one point, the boy lost his voice after being beaten up. That was the tearjerker moment.
Noah sobbed uncontrollably.
Gemma quickly comforted him.
But the mute phase didn’t last long. Soon, the boy could speak again–and even reunited with the girl through a song.
As Gemma wiped Noah’s tears, something clicked in her mind.
That mute boy from back then… Could it have just been temporary?
All these years, she had been searching, but what if she had been looking in the wrong direction from the start?
