Chapter 306: Don’t Make Me Call for Backup
Marcus glanced at the financial report.
Right now, every penny had to be spent where it mattered most.
Mabel wasn’t getting a dime.
But assets…
He called his assistant in.
And had him transfer a property to Mabel’s name.
A high end apartment. Market value–around five million.
Mabel was still reeling from the way he’d looked at her just now, too shaken to think straight. Before she could react, Hector had already dragged her out of the office.
By the time she finally snapped out of it, they were asking for her signature.
“Wait. You’re giving me a condo and calling it a day?”
Hector understood the company’s situation better than anyone.
From the outside, Wilson’s looked like it was thriving, but inside?
It was bleeding money.
If things kept going this way, they’d have no choice but to raise capital. And if that happened, even Marcus would end up as just another salaried employee.
Honestly, Mabel should count herself lucky to be walking away with any assets at all.
Give it a little more time, and forget assets–Marcus might be drowning in debt himself.
“Ms. Johnson, don’t be so pessimistic. Think about it—if he’s handing you an apartment today, who’s to say you won’t get a villa tomorrow?”
“You can’t just eat the whole cake at once, right?”
That logic actually worked on Mabel.
Mostly because she didn’t have the guts to go back and face Marcus again.
The way he’d looked just now, like he’d crawled out of hell itself, still made her shiver.
“Fine. This will do for now.”
Marcus had been the one to make her famous.
She made a lot of money but dumped it all into investments, never thinking to buy herself a place.
Because in her mind, houses, cars–Marcus would take care of all that.
Then her investments tanked. And by the time she realized she should probably buy a place, property prices had already skyrocketed. There weren’t even good locations left.
And then–things spiraled out of control.
Buying a house became the least of her worries.
“This is a prime location, Hector reminded her. “Mr. Wilson’s already being generous.”
“Trust me, the value will keep going up. Even if you quit being a celebrity one day, this place will be enough to live off of.”
The apartment was decked out in luxury finishes. Minimum resale price—five million.
As long as she didn’t blow it on a lavish lifestyle, she’d be set for life.
Mabel stayed silent for a long time. Then, finally, she signed the papers and left.
Hector got to work handling the transfer.
No one dared to disturb Marcus again.
Gemma had had it up to here today.
The Doltons hadn’t contacted her yet, but everyone else?
They were all desperate to hear some juicy gossip from her.
She was done with it.
The second the workday ended, she bolted from the office, heading straight home.
But just when she thought she’d finally escaped–she ran right into the Doltons.
“You probably don’t know me,” said a voice. “Let me introduce myself.”

Lonnie pulled out his ID badge and held it up.
“Take a look. You’ll see I’m the Doltons‘ house steward. I’m here to formally invite you home for dinner.”
Gemma had already guessed the Doltons wouldn’t give up that easily.
She wasn’t going before.
And now, she definitely wasn’t going.
They’d already announced to the whole internet that she was a Dolton. If they locked her up now, there’d be no way to fight back.
“I’m not hungry,” she said flatly. “Go tell them I have zero interest in going back. The Doltons mean nothing to me.”
Lonnie’s eyes flickered with surprise.
Back when he was first sent to N.L City to deal with this, he’d wondered–was this really worth all the trouble?
And now that she knew she was their long–lost heiress, shouldn’t she be jumping at the chance to claim her fortune?
But now, he understood.
There really were people in this world who didn’t give a damn about money.
“Miss Gemma,” he said smoothly, “think this through. Sure, you’re a doctor. You save lives. But let’s be honest–a salary job isn’t gonna make you rich. But as the Doltons‘ heir? That’s a whole different story.”
“Take my advice. Just go back, have dinner, chat with them. Whatever you want–they’ll give it to you.”
Gemma, “…”
Was this guy… stupid?
“Thanks, but no thanks.”
She turned to leave.
Lonnie sighed and pulled out his phone. A video played.
Alijah, sitting at the Doltons‘ estate, happily eating fruit while people around him gushed about how cute he was.
Gemma’s expression changed.
“What are you trying to say?”
“Miss.” Lonnie knew the moment he brought out the video, the time for pleasantries was over. His tone sharpened.
“The boy’s settling in well,” he said. “But he does miss his mother.”
“Don’t you think you should go see him?”
Gemma clenched her fists..
She hated being threatened!
“I know you already divorced Marcus and gave up custody,” Lonnie continued, watching her closely.
“But he’s still your son. You wouldn’t just leave him to fend for himself, would you?”
Lonnie was good at this. He knew exactly which buttons to press.
And this? This was Gemma’s weak spot.
“You’re a doctor,” he went on. “You of all people should have compassion. If this were someone else’s child, you wouldn’t just ignore them, right?”
Gemma, “…”
“So, Miss Gemma–shall we?”
His voice was respectful, but his expression was anything but. And his posture? Pure intimidation. “You’re still not getting in the car?”
Gemma, who had been moments away from punching him, suddenly relaxed.
She turned to face him fully, her gaze sharp.
“Are you sure you want me to go back to the Doltons?”
Lonnie nodded. “Yes, Miss Gemma. Please get in.”
Gemma laughed.
They really thought she was that easy to push around?
At first.
She’d planned to sit back and wait for Christine to stir up trouble at the Doltons.
But they were the ones forcing her hand.
Fine. If they were this eager to have her over, it’d be rude not to bring a few friends along.
“Well,” she said with a smirk, “since you’re so determined to have me there, I’ll bring a few people with me. You don’t mind, do you?”
Lonnie hesitated.

“This is a family dinner…”
“Exactly,” she said. “And I’m bringing my family.”
Lonnie frowned. “Are you…. remarried?”
Gemma let out a cold chuckle.
“I’m not even on the Doltons‘ family registry. You all claim I’m one of you, but now you’re trying to gatekeep what ‘family‘ means?”
Lonnie had no comeback for that. He left to make a call.
He soon went back to her.
“Mr. Jarrett says you can bring whoever you want,” he said. “As long as you come.”
Gemma thought it over.
Translation: They’d already set their trap.
Once she stepped into that house, there’d be no walking back out.
Unless she played by their rules.
“Alright.”
She didn’t argue. Just sent out a few quick messages, then got into the car.
Lonnie smirked.
At the end of the day, the young miss was still too naïve.
