Chapter 19
“Elsie, what’s going on with you and Romald?”
Elsie’s grandmother, Monica, sounded really worried. She was shocked when she heard about their divorce.
“My friend told me you’re divorcing Ronald. Is that true?”
“This is all Missy’s fault. Don’t worry, I’ll handle it.”
Elsie didn’t know how to respond.
Monica always favored her eldest uncle’s family, and it was common for her to show partiality towards Missy Elsie thought Monica was calling to push her to divorce Ronald so Missy could marry him But to her surprise, Monica seemed concerned about her.
All Elsie could hear was her own steady breathing.
Monica continued, not caring what Elsie thought. “I’ll make sure Missy gets rid of the baby. Don’t worry.”
“This matter is not suitable to be discussed over the phone. When do you have time to come back? We can talk about it in detail then.
Elsie tapped her phone to show she was listening.
Monica’s eyes reddened, thinking of Elsie’s parents. Her youngest son had died tragically, leaving only Elsie behind. Elsie had been so traumatized she couldn’t even speak.
Monica’s voice choked up. “Elsie, don’t worry. I’ll make sure you get justice. You and Ronald have been promised to each other since childhood. You two are meant to be together.”
Elsie paused, a mocking smile on her face. What good was a promise? She had married Ronald, but he still cheated on her. He wanted to be with Missy and even had a child with her. Talking about being meant for each other was a joke.
Monica said a few more things, but when Elsie didn’t respond, she hung up.
Elsie stared at the dark screen, seeing her reflection. She brushed away the tears that had slipped down her cheeks, letting out a frustrated, bitter smile.
She didn’t understand why she was still upset. She had left Ronald and decided to move on. But she couldn’t help but feel aggrieved upon hearing Ronald’s name, as tears involuntarily welled up in her eyes.
She booked the earliest flight back home. Some things needed to be cleared up with Monica. She couldn’t let Monica force Missy to have an abortion. Ronald and Missy were at fault, not the innocent child.
As Elsie boarded her flight, Ronald’s plane landed in Novaria. They missed each other by a hair.
Sometimes fate played the cruelest jokes.
A day later, Elsie landed, checked into a hotel, and then headed to The Forbes Villa.
Monica was already there, anxiously waiting on the couch, with Elsie’s eldest uncle’s family beside her.
Elsie’s uncle, Percy Forbes, and his wife, Clara Jones, were there, along with Missy, who had also been summoned by Monica. The three of them looked visibly annoyed.

Chapter 19
“Mom, I can’t believe you’re making such a fuss over Elsie. She’s just kid. Do we really need the whole family here? Percy grumbled, fiddling with his ring. “I have work to do. I don’t have time for this.”
Percy thought, ‘Elsie, that mute, is truly someone who sows discord within the family.”
Clara, donning the demeanor of an aristocratic lady, admired her freshly done manicure while curling her lips and heaving a sigh in Monica’s direction. “Elsie wasn’t raised with us. She’s used to being her own. If you keep spoiling her, who knows what trouble she’ll cause.”
Missy chimed in, “Yeah, Grandma, why did you call us all here? I’m pregnant and can’t handle the stress. The three–hour drive here was exhausting.”
Clara, worried, touched Missy’s belly. “Missy, are you okay? Maybe you should lie down.”
This baby was Missy’s ticket to marrying Ronald and living a life of luxury. They couldn’t take any chances.
Before Missy could respond, Monica’s cane hit the floor with a sharp, loud crack. “Enough! I’m still alive, and I won’t tolerate your scheming!”
That’s when Elsie walked in.
Percy’s already sour expression darkened. Being scolded by his mother was bad enough, but now this mute girl had seen it too.
A fiery rage ignited within Percy. Ignoring Monica’s earlier remarks, he seized the porcelain cup from the table and flung it at Elsie.
He snarled, “You idiot! Couldn’t you come earlier? Hadn’t you already disembarked long ago? Must you insist that the whole family do nothing but wait for you to feel satisfied?”
Elsie dodged, and the cup shattered on the floor.
She hadn’t expected to be yelled at and almost hit as soon as she arrived. Her already heavy heart sank further. She felt foolish for believing Monica would stand up for her. Clearly, Monica was siding with Missy, pushing her to divorce Ronald.
Elsie didn’t want to confront them, then she turned to leave. If Monica was just trying to help Missy, then the baby would be fine.
But as she stepped out, Percy shouted, “Mom, are you crazy?”
Elsie turned to see Monica’s cane striking Percy.
Missy, terrified, backed away, protecting her belly.
Clara tried to intervene, despite her strained relationship with Percy Mom! What are you doing? Percy’s too old and can’t take it. How can you hit him? How is he supposed to face people after this?
