Ronald’s heart ached, the intimacy from moments ago now a cruel joke.
He stared at Elsie, expressionless. “Missy was wrong this time. I’m apologizing on her behalf.”

Elsie let out a cold laugh, staikling tall and looking at Bonald
She signed forcefully,
“An apology?

think an apology can erase the hurt I’ve suffered?”
“And if you know Missy was wrong, why did you stop me from getting a lawyer? What right do you have to stop me?
Elsie’s heart sank, disappointment piling up until it became an avalanche, burying any love she once had for Ronald.
Ronald turned his face away, his voice growing cold. “Why I did it? You really don’t know?”

Though he could explain everything in a few words, Ronald couldn’t bring himself to say it.

At the sanitorium, Elsie sat under a tree, watching children play nearby.
