Chapter 56
After Albert and Bruce left, Elsie sat alone in the empty living room lutching her plions tightly.
The situation with Aline weighed on her like a stone, making it hard to breathe.
She kept replaying her memories with Aline. Could that heavily made up, punk–styled Aline really be a bad person?
Elsie shook her head, trying to clear the chaotic thoughts from her mind.
It was deep into the night, and Elsie lay in bed, unable to find solace in slumber. She tossed and turned restlessly, ultimately releasing a weary sigh.
Suddenly, she remembered the mysterious anonymous sender. Could that person know something? Elsie picked up her phone and found the unfamiliar number. She hesitated for a moment, then typed out a message: You there?]
After sending the message, it was like dropping a stone into the ocean–no response.
Elsie’s heart sank, and an inexplicable unease washed over her. She stared intently at the phone screen.
Who was this anonymous sender? Why had they sent her those messages? Could they be connected to Aline’s disappearance? A series of questions swirled in Elsie’s mind, making her even more anxious.
She suddenly sat up, grabbed her phone, and sent a message to Alben. Albert, can you help me trace a number?]
Albert replied quickly. [What number? Whose is it?
Elsie sent the anonymous number and briefly explained the situation
Albert’s response came quickly, but it made Elsie’s heart sink. “Can’t trace it. This number isn’t registered anywhere, like it appeared
out of thin air.”
How is that possible? Elsie pondered, feeling even more confused. So strange.”
Albert sent another message. [Elsie, don’t worry. I’ll keep looking into it. It might just be a prank.]
Albert’s message left Elsie feeling even more unsettled. She felt that his was far from simple. It was as it closing in on her.

Elsie ran a hand through her hair, feeling her thoughts tangled. She opened the anonymous number, staring at the cold digits, confused.
Meanwhile, far away, Ronald was lounging on a leather sofa, swirling a glass of red wine. His phone screen displayed Elsie’s message: [You there?]
A mocking smile played on Ronald’s lips, his deep eyes envisioning Esie. That

He recalled the day Elsie went with him to the courthouse to finalize their divorce.
A sudden wave of irritation washed over Ronald. He set the

Aline curled up on the ground, blood seeping from the corner of her mouth, but her eyes were eerily calm.
She looked at Missy’s twisted face beneath the makeup, feeling no fear, only an overwhelming sadness. She knew her life had been sold by her gambler father long ago. Now, a buyer had sought her out.
Missy looked down at Aline, her sharp heels grinding into Aline’s fingers, her voice harsh. Trying to run? Do you even know who you are? You think that mute Elsie can really protect you?”
The searing pain made Aline grunt, but she still didn’t beg for mercy, Begging would only make Missy more ruthless.
She slowly lifted her head, looking at Missy with mocking eyes. “Missy, you’re pathetic. After all your scheming and meticulous planning, in the end, will it not amount to nothing? Ronald doesn’t care about you!”
Missy’s face twisted, and she slapped Aline hard, “Shut up! Who do you think you are to meddle in my business?”
Aline spat out blood, laughing. I’m a dying person. A bug you can crush anytime. But even if I die, I’ll tell you, you’ll never be better than Elsie! She’s mute, but she’s kind, brave, talented. And you? What do you have besides your pretty face? You’re just a shallow person, a whore who’d sell everything for a man!”
Aline’s words were harsh.
Missy had always envied everything Elsie had. Envied that even as a mute, Elsie still shone brightly. She had schemed to get Ronald, to take Elsie’s place as Ronald’s wife.
“You… you…” Missy’s fingers trembled with rage as she pointed at Alno, unable to complete her sentence.
Aline looked at Missy’s furious face, feeling a sudden lightness.
She knew she wouldn’t live long. Rather than clinging to life, she’d rather curse freely, venting her long–held grievances. “Missy, I’m telling you, you’ll never beat Elsie! You think making her divorce Ronald means you win? You’re wrong! Ronald doesn’t love you! He loves Elsie! You’re just the mistress in their relationship!”
Aline’s voice grew weaker, but she persisted in finishing her last words. “Just… wait… one day… you’ll regret it.”
