Chapter 68
Jace’s confused gaze landed on me as if he were starting to wonder if I was faking all of this. It wasn’t until the doctor spoke again in a deep voice, “If it’s not a physical issue, then things are only more serious than we anticipated. The ability to lose the sense of pain is the most severe kind of psychological disorder.“}
“In all my years of practice, I’ve never known what kind of truly tragic experience could drive someone so mad that their nerves become numb. Mr. Shepard, I suggest you find a psychologist to give your wife a proper evaluation. Although treatment now might not necessarily have any effect.”
Before Jace could reply, Zara cut in sharply. “Is this hospital even qualified? Willow’s perfectly fine! She’s just upset at her husband. And now you want to treat her like she has a mental illness? What kind of quack doctor are you? Are you trying to slap her with a fake diagnosis and lock her in a psych ward or something?”
The doctor’s face flushed red with anger. He turned to Jace and said coldly, “Mr. Shepard, everyone can see whether your wife is acting normally or not. It’s your decision whether or not to seek psychological help!“}
This time, Jace spoke without hesitation, “Doctor, please find the most experienced psychologist in your hospital for me. I want the doctor to perform deep hypnosis on my wife. I need to know what exactly she has experienced in the past month that has turned her into this.”
In the psychologist’s office, I sat in a soft recliner, holding the calf in my arms. “Your name is Willow Lane, right? I heard you love sunflowers. Do you like them because of their bright, lively yellow color?“}]
As the psychologist casually chatted with me, I began to feel a rare sense of safety and calm. Slowly, I drifted into sleep. In my dream, I went back to the day Jace sent me to the cattle ranch. I was crying, clutching our daughter tightly in my arms, trying to explain. “Jace, I swear I didn’t poison Zara’s baby. I’m a mother, too; I would never do something so cruel to a newborn!“}
Still, no matter how flustered and helpless my explanations were, all I received in return was Jace’s disdainful sneer. “The baby didn’t ingest anything except breast milk. So how else could she have been poisoned? There were only a few of us in the house. If it wasn’t you, are you saying it was me? Or that Zara poisoned her own child?“}
“Willow, you are truly disgustingly vicious. This time, Zara didn’t pursue the matter out of consideration for me and the fact that our daughter is still so young. You should know that attempted poisoning with intent to kill is a serious crime once prosecuted!“>
Jace’s voice was cold and terrifying. “If you can’t learn how to behave, I don’t even want to imagine how our daughter would turn out under your influence. You need to stay at that cattle ranch and reflect on your actions. Maybe then you’ll grow a conscience.“>
After arriving at the desolate and remote cattle ranch, Jace dumped me and my daughter there. He drove off with a slam of the accelerator. “Our daughter is barely a month old and can’t be separated from you, so stay with her at the cattle ranch. If it weren’t for you being such an unqualified mother, she wouldn’t have had to come to this remote wilderness to reflect with you at such a young age!“} Feeling the chill of the open plains and seeing how thin her swaddling blanket was, I grew worried. I pulled out my phone and called Jace. Moments later, I heard the sound of his car engine. Seeing Jace returning, I thought he had softened his heart and changed his mind. I excitedly hugged my daughter and went to meet him.”
