Chapter 9
Shaun remained expressionless as his icy gaze landed on Arnold’s hand on my shoulder.
“Fiancée?
“You wanna marry my wife? Have you checked with me, her husband?”
As he spoke, several security guards approached us and blocked the elevators quietly without attracting anyone’s attention.
I might be clueless, but at this point, I realized something.
Arnold knew Shaun.
Lawrence tried to stop me from seeing Shaun.
Both Laura and Thalia thought I was Shaun’s late wife.
I was Mona Becker, Shaun’s late wife.

Three years ago, after I came around, Arnold often went to check on m in the hospital room.
We went to the same senior high. ”
Though we weren’t in the same class, we had heard of each other’s names before.
I was famous because of my good looks, and everyone knew him because. he always ranked first in the entire grade.
Later, he was admitted to the best university in Washington D. C., and I

stayed in Los Angeles and went on with my life after graduation. Our paths never crossed again.
I heard he got a job at a top–tier hospital in Washington D. C. Why was he in Los Angeles?
Thrilled, I grabbed his arm.
“What’s going on, Arnold? Isn’t this 2022? They all tell me it’s 2025. I don’t get it.”
He comforted me gently, “Hey, chill.
“Everything’s fine.”
He told me I had a car wreck and ended up a vegetable for three years.
He also showed me a big stack of hospital bills.
“A car wreck?”
I tried hard to recall, and some images indeed popped up.
The nurses around us whispered among themselves, and I immediately curled into a ball.
“Don’t come over!”
Arnold said, “Mona, calm down. You were in the darkness for so long, and it’s normal that you have some stress reactions such as being afraid of light and people.
“I’ll help you walk through it.”
He made a perfect lie for me regarding those three years.
Chapter 9
He led me to believe I had been in a deep sleep.
I didn’t know I had a trip abroad, met Shaun, married him, and was picked on to the point of feeling depressed.
I didn’t know I had a relationship that was as fragile as a bubble.
I thought I was still that Mona, an ordinary person who got up in the morning, went to work, got off work, and came back to my beloved, cooked with him, and watched a film we both liked together.
My life wasn’t exactly exciting.
But it was real, warm, and reassuring.
Just like Arnold.
Noticing the dazed expression on my face, Arnold became uneasy, and
his hands trembled.
“I’ll explain everything to you after we go home, Mona.”
Shaun looked at us.
Then he said, “Mona, come here.”
I remained motionless.
He softened his voice and said, “Be good, Moon.
“It’s all my fault. I’ll change. Come back to me, OK?”
I shook my head.
“No. I wanna go home with Arnold.”
Seeing that I held Arnold’s hand, Shaun bit his lip, his face slightly

twisting.
“Mona. I’ve been looking for you for years. This time, I won’t let you slip away.”
With that, he raised his hand and made a gesture.
The security guards behind him closed in.
Meanwhile, the elevator doors opened, and a dozen of bodyguards walked
out.
I took out my phone calmly.
“Hello? Is this the police? Someone’s trying to kidnap me.”
