Chapter 1
After drinking the milk Alpha Franklin handed me,a strange heaviness pulled at my limbs.
I tried to shift–just a little–but my wolf, usually alert to the tiniest threat, had gone quiet.
That’s when I knew something was really, really wrong.
I felt my consciousness slip away like mist. I couldn’t even fight it.
When I finally came to, I had no idea where I
was.
“Franklin, are you out of your goddamn mind?”

That was Beta Zach Wilcher, Franklin’s old childhood friend.
I couldn’t open my eyes, couldn’t move a muscle, but I heard everything.
“You really intend to keep this from Sirena ?” He paused, voice cracking with disbelief. “Sirena is your Luna! You’re drugging your own mate just to rip out her organ for Claire?”
Alpha Franklin’s reply was ice–cold. “Only she’s a match. Claire doesn’t have time to wait for another donor.”
“As for Sirena… I’ll make it up to her.”
Those words slipped into my ears like venom, slow and burning. I hovered in the haze between waking and unconsciousness, but that voice–Alpha Franklin’s voice-

dragged at me like claws raking through fog.
“Doesn’t she want me to marry her? I’ll propose after the operation. She’ll be my Luna, I’ll never divorce her. For the rest of my life.”
A laughable promise for someone who was literally about to take one of my organs.
The wolf in me growled, weak but furious. My instincts were muffled, numbed by whatever potion or sedative they’d pumped into me, but not silenced.
Then came the crash.
Bang. Bang. Bang.
Glass shattering, a chair knocked over. And then Zach’s voice, shaking with fury, cutting through the sterile air like a blade.

“What’s the use of making it up to her when her damn kidney is gone?! What the hell are you thinking, Alpha Franklin? What kind of spell has Claire cast on you?”
My heart twisted at the name.
“You lost everything for her during that rogue attack–your legs, your chance to lead the Blue Moon Pack! And what did she do? She ran off with another Alpha like the coward she’s always been!”
Beta Zach, His voice cracked with frustration. He was never the one yelling sense into Franklin, but this time….
“But Sirena?” he rasped, hoarse. “It was her who stayed. She’s the one who carried you -literally–when you couldn’t walk. Who learned to inject medicine by practicing

on herself until her legs were covered in bruises. Who traveled across the continent
to find a cure. She visited almost seven hundred hospitals in five years. Hell, she even knelt outside the lair of the scariest black wizard in the wizarding coven for a month just to convince him to treat you!”
A tremble ran through my body. Not from pain–from memory.
I remembered that rain–soaked month like it was yesterday. Every time I got close, the witches would repel me with their potions. Witches and werewolves simply don’t coexist well. How I’d refused to leave, even when my knees bled and my wolf begged me to shift and run.
“And now Claire is back. Now that the Blue Moon Pack has money and power again, she comes crawling back with fake tears and a

tight dress, and you-” Zach choked on his words. “You’re giving her everything. Again!”
“When Sirena got pregnant with your pup, Claire threw a tantrum. And what did you do? You gave Sirena an abortifacient. She still thinks it was her fault the pup didn’t make it. And now, Alpha Franklin… you’re going to take her kidney too?”
“Enough!” Franklin’s voice boomed through the room like a whip crack.
“I know Sirena loves me,” he said, his tone almost bored. “She loves me enough to give everything. And yes, Claire is selfish and
vain, but she’s my fated mate. I’m crazy about her.“”
Fated mate.

could.
“And Sirena? What is she?”
“She means nothing,” he spat. “My mind’s made up. No one will stop me. I must have her kidney!”
Then the blade went in.
I don’t know if it was silver–laced or just a bad dose, but the anesthetic didn’t work. Every slice of flesh, every tug of my muscle -I felt it all.
But nothing hurt as much as the crack in my chest. The sharp, irreversible breaking of my heart.
Ten years.
Ten years of devotion. Of blind, stupid love.

From sixteen to twenty–six, I had held onto a dream. On my eighteenth birthday, during my coming–of–age ceremony, I had prayed fervently to the Moon Goddess, begging her to make Alpha Franklin my destined mate.
But it was clear the Moon Goddess hadn’t heard my prayers. After enduring the agony of my first shift, I was dealt another cruel blow: the heartbreak of watching Alpha Franklin and Claire celebrate their bond as
mates.
Their fairy–tale didn’t last. Not when the rogue ambush happened.
Franklin had leapt in front of Claire during a border skirmish, took a poisoned claw to the spine. Couldn’t walk. Couldn’t fight. Lost his claim to the blue moon pack. And Claire? She left him before the blood on his

wheelchair dried.
And me? I stayed. Through everything.
His grief. His rages. His ice–cold shoulder. His cruel words. The days he forgot I was even in the room.
I stayed.
I gave him my time, my energy, my wolf’s loyalty. I gave him my pup. And now… I was giving him a kidney.
Because his fated mate needed it.
I don’t know how much time passed before I felt it–that brutal tug, that final tear inside me. Not just my kidney, but the last shred of love I had for him.
Gone.

When I woke up, the air was thick with the sharp scent of disinfectant. The lights overhead were blindingly bright. My body felt as if it had been repeatedly run over by a heavy truck.
My wolf let out a feeble whimper.
