Chapter 3
There was silence–dense and suffocating, like a heavy fog that refused to lift. Even my wolf, curled up tight inside me, didn’t make a sound. She was too tired. Too wounded.
I wasn’t sure how long it lasted until I heard the soft click of a lighter on the other end of the line. A slow inhale. Then Alpha Roderick’s voice followed, low and rough.
“You rejected me before.”
I stared at the sterile white ceiling of the hospital room, the IV ticking like a countdown in my veins. Every second it fed me fluids, it drained another drop of love I had left for Alpha Franklin.
“Just answer me,” I said, voice flat. All the

fury had burned off. All that was left was bone–dry resolve. “Will you or won’t you?”
There was a pause, two seconds at most, but it felt like an eternity. When Alpha Roderick finally spoke, his tone carried a an indescribable emotion in his tone, and his breathing seemed a bit unsteady.
“Come to me within seven days,We’ll get married.”
My throat tightened.
“And,” he added after a pause, “once you marry me, you’ll have no connection with Alpha Franklin. Ever again. I’ll tear him myself if I have to.”
I closed my eyes and exhaled. My wolf stirred, lifting her head at last.

Instead, a hired caretalaker came in. “Miss Sirena, Alpha Franklin has been extremely busy with the Blue moooppackhouse. He asked us to take excellent care of you!”
“Hmm,” I responded faintlylyobb bothering to expose the lie.

Busy with the blue moon packhouse? Sure. I knew exactly where he was–by Claire’s bedside, holding her hand like she was the only person in the world who mattered.
He strode into the ward, every inch the polished Alpha in his tailored suit. There was a touch of fatigue in his features, but it only made him more impossibly handsome, like a tragic hero who had just returned from battle.
“There you are,” he said, all apology and
charm. “I’m sorry, Sirena. Things have been hectic at the blue moon packhouse, and I’ve been… preparing a surprise. That’s why I couldn’t be here for you.”
I shifted my bag onto my shoulder, sidestepping his outstretched hand.

“What surprise?”
His lips twitched into a soft smile. “You’ll see.”
Half an hour later, his car pulled up to one of those over–the–top luxury hotels that only Alphas and pack elites seemed can afford.
Inside, the doors to the banquet hall opened, and I was hit with an avalanche of roses and flickering candles.
People turned. Romantic music played in the background like we were in some rom–com.
Then Franklin led me to the center of the room and dropped to one knee.
I blinked.
He pulled out a ring the size of a pigeon egg.

Diamonds so sparkled. All eyes were on us.
On me.
“Sirena,” he said, looking up like some kind of tortured lover–boy Alpha, “will you marry me?”
I froze. My heart clenched painfully, squeezed by an invisible hand.
I had dreamed of this moment once–longed for it, imagined it, even rehearsed what I’d
say.
But now, standing here, staring at that glittering ring, all I could feel was bitter irony.
This wasn’t love. This was a transaction.
This ring was bought with my kidney.
I opened my mouth, finally ready to tell him

Then the door slammed open.
“Sorry I’m late.”
That voice. Soft. Fragile.
Claire Blake.
Dressed in white, pale–faced. Tears shimmered in her eyes as she walked toward us, her voice trembling.
“Alpha Franklin, Sirena” she began, her tone apologetic and choked with emotion. “I was wrong about what happened back then. I shouldn’t have… pestered Alpha Franklin these past few days. I was disturbing you. So, when I found out you were going to propose, I came here to give you my blessings.”

She reached into her bag and pulled out two small gift boxes, handing one to each of us with trembling hands.
“Wish you… happiness,” she whispered.
After saying that, she turned around to leave. But just as she took two steps, her body suddenly swayed and she fainted directly to the ground.
“Claire!”
Alpha Franklin’s reaction was immediate. He abandoned his kneeling position and the diamond ring still clutched in his hand, rushing to scoop her up in his arms.
The room erupted into whispers.
“Wow, he doesn’t even try to hide it anymore.”

“It’s always the same with them–Claire faints, and Alpha Franklin forgets the rest of the world exists.”
“Poor Sirena. She’s been with him for years. and still can’t compete with Claire.”
I stood there, silent and motionless, my fingernails digging into my palms.
As Alpha Franklin carried Claire away, she turned her head just enough to mouth three venomous words at me.
“You’ll never win.”
It was such a childish, clumsy act.
But Alpha Franklin didn’t see it. He didn’t question it. He just believed her, without hesitation.
