Chapter 22 A Dinner

|| Lilac’s POV ||

The engagement was broken, but the weight of it still clung to me like a shadow I couldn’t shake. I sat on the edge of my bed, my mind a whirlwind of thoughts. I should have felt relief, freedom, but instead, I felt uneasy. So much had changed, and yet, so much remained the same

My wolf was still faint, her presence a whisper in the back of my mind. It was dangerous, if Kael or anyone else found out about my weakened state, I’d be vulnerable

And then there was Alaric. In my past life, I hadn’t met him until long after I’d mated with Kael. He never crossed my path, I never crossed his. He was shaldom in the castle as well. While growing up, I might have seen a sickly boy with dull eyes but never paid attention. I had no memory whatsoever on that man. I knew nothing about where he lived, what he did and if he was involved on any of the casualties. And this time, he was always there, a constant presence that both comforted and unnerved me. Even thinking about his name made my heart beat faster, a flutter of something I couldn’t quite name. What should I do? Could I really trust him? Goddess please help me

I sighed, running a hand through my hair as I tried to push the thoughts away. My phone buzzed on the nightstand, pulling me from my spiraling thoughts. I glanced at the screen, and my stomach dropped. Kael’s name flashed across the screen, the sight of it sending a jolt of irritation. through me. I ignored it, letting it ring out, but he called again. And again. And again. Urgh! He was impossible to shake off, like a bad cold that just wouldn’t go away. Finally, I gave in and picked up the call, my voice tight with frustration

Hello, Lilac,Kael’s voice was calm, composed, as if he hadn’t just bombarded me with calls

Hey,I replied, keeping my tone short and clipped. I wasn’t in the mood for small talk

“Can we talk?he asked, his voice soft but insistent. Please don’t say no. You deserve an explanation, and I want to make it up to you.”

I clenched my jaw, my grip tightening on the phone. I knew Kael well enough to know that he wouldn’t let this go. If I refused, he’d probably show up at my doorstep, and the last thing I needed was my overprotective dad facing off with him. God only knew what my dad might do to that bastard. And Kael, though came from an Alpha bloodline, was never one of the strong ones

There’s nothing to talk about, Kael,I replied

Let’s meet for a dinner. Please Lilac,he insisted

The audacity! He carried his mate away from the crowd on our engagement ceremony and still he thought I could meet him for a dinner

I want to make it up to you. Just give me a chance and I swear you won’t regret it,his voice echoed over my ears

Regret it? I regret even meeting him on the first place! If my wolf were there, I swear I would have

I don’t think my parents will like that.I said, my tone firm but polite. Before he could respond. I hung up. tossing the phone onto the bed with a frustrated sigh

I thought I’d dodged him for good, but I was wrong. Not long after, I heard my mom’s footsteps approaching my room. The door creaked open, and she stepped inside, her expression a mix of concern and hesitation

Hey, sweetpea, she said softly, sitting down on the bed beside me. How are you?”

I forced a smile, though it didn’t quite reach my eyes

I’m fine. Mom.I said, my voice steady despite the storm raging inside me

She studied me for a moment, her gaze filled with motherly concern. Well, there’s been a situation, she said, her tone cautious. Cassandra called me. They want us to have a family. dinner.”

My stomach dropped at her words, a cold knot of dread forming in my chest. Before I could respond, she added quickly, It’s fine if you don’t want to go. Your dad and I will manage.”

I froze, my mind racing. A family dinner? At a time like this? It couldn’t be a simple dinner. They had to be plotting something

-Where and when?I asked, my voice tight

At the Moon Garden. Tomorrow, sweetpea, she replied, her tone filled with worry. This was bad

My heart clenched at the name. The Moon Garden. It was one of the most highend restaurants in the kingdom, a place of elegance and prestige. But for me, it held darker memories. It was where Kael and I had gotten married in my past life. The memory of that day was etched into my mind, a painful reminder of how quickly things could fall apart

The wedding had been a grand affair, the kind of event that people would talk about for years. The Moon Garden had been transformed into a dreamscape of light and fragrance, with cascading wisteria hanging from golden arches and thousands of twinkling lights mimicking a sky full of stars. The scent of fresh roses and nightblooming jasmine filled the air, mingling with the soft melody of a string quartet playing in the background. It was the kind of night that little girls dreamed of, the kind of love story that birds would sing about
