The room was silent, the weight of his words pressing down on me. I could feel the eyes of every alpha, luna, and noble in the restaurant on me, their whispers filling the air like a low hum. So. this was their plan, I thought, my mind racing. To turn the tables in public, to force me into a
comer.
“I will do anything you ask me of. I will even reject her, right now, right here,” He slowly stood up.
Kael’s eyes fell on Coco, who looked more frightened than ever. Her lips parted as if she wanted. to speak, but no words came out.
Besides, once you are marked and mated, the bond with her will fade since they are not mated yer,” Alpha King Darius said, his tone matter–of–fact.
I almost laughed. In my past life, the bond between Kael and Coco had never faded, even after I mated with him. They had already been together, their connection stronger than anyone realized. But this time, I wouldn’t make the same mistake.
“You have grown up in the castle. You know Kael better than anyone will ever do. And the same goes for you. The bond you share is nothing compared to this mate bond he has found out of the blue,” Luna Cassandra chimed in.
“Yes, Lilac, please trust me. I love you and only you,” Kael said, his voice filled with desperation.
The whispers grew louder, the tension in the room thick enough to cut with a knife. I remained silent and thankfully dad and Ez were doing better than I expected.
Then Kael turned to Coco, his expression hardening as he said, “if this is what it takes to get you back, then be it. I, Kael Reventhorn, reject you, Coco Miller, as my ma,
“Noooo… please!” Coco fell to her knees, her voice trembling with fear, “Please, don’t reject me. I’m a mere omega. The rejection will kill me.”
It was true. Omegas were weak, their bodies unable to withstand the pain of a rejection, especially from an alpha. Coco dragged herself to my feet, her hands clutching the hem of my dress as she looked up at me with pleading eyes.
“Please, Luna…. I won’t be in your way. I’ll never even show up in front of you or Kael. Please, let me live,” she said, her voice breaking.
I could feel my parents‘ anger simmering just beneath the surface, but I stayed calm, my expression remained neutral as I sipped my wine.
Coco’s performance was flawless, her tears and trembling voice pulling at the heartstrings of everyone in the room. I remembered this scene from my past life, how she had played the damsel in distress, slandering me as a bully in front of everyone multiple times. And now, here she was, doing it again. Too bad, I wasn’t the same Lilac anymore.
Chapter 27 A Show–il
+ Pearls
I set my glass down on the table and slowly stood up, my hands clasping Coco’s shoulders as I helped her to her feet. She flinched at first, expecting anything but warmth. But I did the opposite.
“You don’t have to kneel before me,” I said, my voice loud and clear. “I am not the Luna candidate for Kael anymore.”
“Lilac, please. Don’t bother yourself with her,” Kael reached for my hand and I took the chance. I held Coco’s hand and placed it on Kael’s.
“I’m happy that Kael and you have found each other, and I promise you, I will never be in your way,” I gave them a sad smile as if I were being torn apart from inside. Didn’t you want a show? I will give you one.
I turned to my parents, a small smirk playing on their lips as they stood up. My mom’s voice was calm but firm as she addressed Luna Cassandra. “Cassandra, we’ve known each other for a long time. Is that why you invited us tonight? So that my daughter could be rejected by Kael once more?”
“No, Lyra, that was never the intention,” Cassandra replied quickly, her tone defensive.
“Kael has no connection with this omega,” Darius added.
Dad stepped forward, his voice steady but laced with authority. “Kael still feels the bond deeply, so it would be inappropriate to separate them. Rejecting a fated mate is not a good thing either. It may affect his wolf. Since he is one of the Alpha King Candidates, it will be highly inappropriate. Besides, Lilac is still young. I want her to enjoy her days before she gets dragged into this politics.”
He turned to me, his expression softening. “Let’s go home.”
I nodded, relief flooding through me as we made our way toward the exit. But before we left, I walked to the counter to pay the bill. I didn’t want to owe the Reventhorns anything.
As I reached the counter, the girl behind it smiled at me.
“It’s already been paid by our alpha,” she said, her tone polite but with a hint of awe. “He said the Blackwoods are always welcome here, and their tables will always be taken care of.”
“Your alpha?” I asked.
“Yes, the Nightshades.” The girl replied casually.
I froze, my heart skipping a beat, Alpha of the Nightshades? How did that happen? I didn’t even know him! I glanced around the room, my mind racing as I tried to make sense of it. But there was no time to dwell on it. Not now.
As we stepped out into the cool night air, I couldn’t shake the feeling that the game had just gotten a lot more complicated. Were I being watched! Why were they involved?
