Chapter 39 A New Suitor
|| Lilac’s POV ||
The council hall doors swung shut behind us, muffling the chaos inside. I exhaled–long and slow -as if I’d been holding my breath for hours. Dad had to take care of some work, so, Ez and I headed out first.
Ezra bumped my shoulder, grinning, “did you see Cassandra’s face when…”
I rolled my eyes, but my chest warmed, “Ishh… not here. Remember, walls even have ears in werewolf world.”
“Alright,” he sighed.
“Lilac.”
I turned to see Alexander approaching, his tall frame cutting an imposing figure against the backdrop of the grand hall. His sharp eyes were focused on me, and for a moment, I felt a flicker of unease. What did he want now?
“Hello, Alpha,” I said, bowing my head slightly in respect.
“Well, not yet,” he replied with a small smile, his tone light but his gaze intense.
“You will be soon,” I said, forcing a smile of my own. The thought of Alexander as the Alpha King came to my mind again. He was strong, capable, and fair everything Kael wasn’t.
“Yeah,” he said, his voice softening. He glanced at Ezra, who was standing a few steps away, before turning back to me.
“Thank you for your help today, Alexander,” I said, my gratitude genuine. “I don’t know how we would have managed without you.”
“Don’t worry about that,” he replied, his eyes lingering on me for a moment longer than necessary. Then he shifted his gaze to Ezra. “Can we talk for a minute? Alone?”
I hesitated, glancing at Ezra, who smirked and waved me off.
“I’ll be in the car,” he said, his tone teasing as he walked away.
I turned back to Alexander, my curiosity piqued.
“Well?” I asked, my voice steady despite the nerves fluttering in my chest.
Alexander stepped closer. Too close. The scent of mint and steel wrapped around me.
“I need to ask you something,” he said, voice low.
“Okay?” I forced my hands to stay at my sides not to fidget

His jaw worked. Then-
“I want your permission to court you.”
Silence.
The words hung between us, heavy as a death sentence.
“Wh-” I choked. “That’s… sudden.”

“You heard me.” His gaze burned into mine, unflinching. “You’re strong. Clever. Exactly the kind of Luna I need.” A muscle ticked in his check. “I swear on the Moon Goddess–even if my fated mate appears, I’ll reject her. You’ll come first.”
My stomach dropped.
Memories flashed- in my past life, Alexander had taken a chosen mate. His soulmate had shown up shortly after, but he had stayed true to his chosen mate, rejecting his soulmate in a way that was firm but not cruel. But it didn’t go well. His soulmate was the beta’s daughter from his chosen mate’s pack. The rejection left her heartbroken, and though he was a man of honor and his sincerity was evident in every word he spoke, this caused him a lot of trouble and distress in future. Their pack went downhill, and his luna lost face in her previous pack.
He means it.
And that was the problem.
Alaric’s smirk flashed in my mind–the way his fingers had brushed mine last night, teasing, promising. The heat in his gaze when he’d whispered, “You’re mine.”
I swallowed hard. “Alexander, I-”
“I know it’s sudden.” His voice softened. “You’ve been through hell with Kael. Take your time. But know this–I’m not asking as an Alpha. I’m asking as a man who sees your worth.”
The sincerity in his eyes was a knife to my ribs. I couldn’t respond.
He stepped closer, voice dropping. “And I know your heart’s… tangled right now.” A pause. “But I’m patient.”
I opened my mouth, but no words came. What could I say? Sorry, but I’m halfway in love with the guy who climbs through my window and calls me dove like I meant him the world?
Alexander exhaled through his nose. “Just think about it.” He turned to leave, then glanced back. “For the record? You deserve better than a man who makes you doubt yourself.”
Then he was gone, leaving me standing there like an idiot, my traitorous heart doing somersaults.
The drive back home was filled with chatter, Ezra’s excitement a stark contrast to the storm of emotions swirling inside me.

I smiled faintly, my mind still replaying the conversation with Alexander. “Thanks, Ez,” I said, my voice soft. “But it wasn’t just me. You played your part perfectly.”
He grinned, leaning back in his seat. “Yeah, well, I only followed
your
instructions.”
I chuckled, but my thoughts quickly drifted back to the events of the day. I had plotted every move carefully, anticipating Kael’s accusations and preparing for every possible outcome. When Ezra had met with the rogue for the second time, I had been there, hidden in the shadows, watching and waiting. I had seen the wolf taking pictures, and as soon as he left, I tackled the rogue with Ezra’s help. We had tranquilized him and kept him hidden until the council meeting, where we revealed him to the world.
Now, everyone knew the rogues were a threat, and they would take the situation seriously. Ezra was safe, and the chances of us being attacked were significantly reduced. But there was still so much more to do. The rogue threat was far from over, and Cassandra won’t sit still.
As we drove through the quiet streets, my mind wandered to Alexander’s proposal. It was unexpected, but it wasn’t entirely unwelcome. He was a good man, someone who would treat me with respect and honor.
Then there was Alaric. He had saved the day for us. If he hadn’t shown me those pictures, we wouldn’t have been able to expose Kael and the rogue threat. I owed him so much.
