Chapter 7
Seeing Lucas again, I noticed he had lost a lot of weight.
He was unshaven, with dark circles under his eyes.
“Zoe, I finally… found you.”
Lucas rushed forward to hug me, trembling. I wanted to push him away, but I was too weak to even open a bottle cap now.
Quinn wasn’t home, so I had no choice but to let him hold me.
“I’m sorry. I apologize for what we did before. I regret it.”
Lucas’s voice shook, but I felt nothing.
If apologies could fix everything, there wouldn’t be so many tragedies in the world.
“Lucas, are you saying that after taking my kidney, my uterus, and draining most of my blood, you finally regret it?”
“I remember telling you would die if you took more blood when Rosie was sick. But you still did it.”
“Why act all sorry now? Just go.”
Lucas trembled even harder but didn’t let go.
Teardrops fell on my shoulder. Lucas was actually crying.
Growing up, Lucas had always been the strongest of the three.
But now he clung to me, sobbing like a child.
“I’m sorry Zoe. I’m so sorry.”
Lucas kept repeating those words.
Until Quinn returned and chased him out with a broom.
“Get out! Leave us alone!”
“How dare you show your face here! I’m begging you, don’t ever appear in front of us again!”
Lucas looked at me sorrowfully, but I never met his gaze.

“Go away Lucas. From the moment you insisted on taking my blood, I cut ties with all of you.”
The light faded from Lucas’s eyes. He hung his head and slowly walked away.

One day, I was lying in the yard as usual.
Sunlight filtered through the leaves. Suddenly, I saw the people who died in the explosion standing under the tree.
They smiled and waved at me, saying:
“You’ve worked hard.”
