Book 2 The One Who Saved Me from an Abusive Marriage Also Cheated
“I had her half–dead. Six more months, and she would’ve broken. But no–you insisted on taking over. Now look where we are.”
Caleb Lane’s voice dripped with mockery.
I bit down on my lip until I tasted blood.
My husband, Zane Cooper had once mentioned a half–brother.
I never imagined it would be Caleb Lane.
The man who beat me for three years.
The man who shattered my eye and left me

blind.
And the man who “saved” me?
They were brothers.
“If you’d killed her, what would Lila do?” Zane’s voice was thick with disgust. “She needs that patent under her name to advance her career.”
Caleb snorted. “Thought you had it handled. Two years married, and she still hasn’t talked.”
“Soon.”
“Zoe’s pregnant. Once she gives birth, all I have to do is kill the baby in front of her. She’ll talk.”
“That’s your own child.” Even the notoriously

Numb, a single trail of bloody tears slid down my cheeks.
I picked up the phone and dialed.
“Professor, I accept your offer. I’ll leave with you in seven days.””
My professor’s voice warmed with relief when I called.
“Zoe, you were always my brightest student. I’m glad you’ve reconsidered. How are your eyes responding to the treatment I sent last month?”
“Almost healed” I said.
After I lost my sight, my professor had exhausted every resource to help me. Last month, he’d finally perfected an experimental

drug.
My vision had been returning in blurred fragments.
I’d planned to tell Zane today.
Now? Pointless.
“Good, good,” he said. “But remember–this research is classified. No family, no friends can know. You may be gone for years. Are you certain?”
I clenched my teeth, steadying my voice.
“I’m certain.”
I never wanted to see any of them again.
I’d just hung up when Zane’s footsteps creaked up the stairs.

He thought I was still blind. His face was storm–dark, but his voice?
Honey–sweet.
“Who was that, darling?”
I tucked my phone away. “Just catching up with my advisor.”
Zane studied me, then settled on the couch.
The TV flickered on.
A video from Caleb Lane began to play.
A man’s roars.
A woman’s screams.
The floodgates opened, and all that old pain

came rushing back.
Two years later, and my mouth still went bone–dry with terror.
I forced my blind act, voice trembling.
“What… what are you watching?”
Zane stared at me. “A domestic violence case. Victim sent this in. Funny–she’s about your age when Caleb got to you. Though she fared worse. Perforated intestines.”
Bile rocketed up my throat. I barely made it to the trash can before vomiting.
Zane was at my side in an instant.
“Zoe! God, I’m so sorry–I shouldn’t bring work home like this.”
