A year passed. One cozy afternoon, I saw him again.
Cassian.
He was hunched on a park bench, unshaven and gaunt, clutching a torn coat against the wind like it was the only thing he had
left.

According to Damian, Kai had gone hard on him after the wedding–cutting off his offshore trades, taking over his operations
piece by piece, until there was nothing left. Cassian lost it all–his money, his men, his power. 1
Even his name.
Rumor had it Alessia died in a car accident. They’d fought–screamed, maybe even begged–and she drove off. Crashed headfirst into a divider. Gone. Just one month before the baby was due.
I didn’t know if it was true. Didn’t need to.
All I knew was, the Cassian I once loved was now nothing more than a memory. A stranger on the street.
“Izzy, come on,” Kai said, holding the car door open for me. “I got the cake you love.”
I slid in with a smile, brushing a kiss against his cheek. “Thanks, babe.”
As I glanced out the window one last time, Cassian was gone.
Maybe this was the ending we were always heading toward.
Quiet. Final. The best it could ever be.
