Chapter Nineteen: Matthias Crowe
I arrived at my grandmother’s soon enough. She lives on the edge of town to preserve her peace, she’s not really a fan of people.
But my father has her house filled with more than enough staff to care for her.
I would have gotten here quicker had I not stopped to grab the divorce papers. The phone call with my mother was an eye opener
My parents love aurielle. They were not upset when Nerissa died. In fact, I think my mother was a bit happy.
Not because my mate died, but because I wouldn’t have to marry her. And here she is, planning, plotting for ways I can keep
Aurielle stuck in a marriage with me. Why would I want that?
And it really dawned on me that I’m fighting against a divorce when I should be jumping. I don’t know what to do. If this was a
pack problem, I could answer this in seconds flat. But in my own marriage……
The last time I let my parents decide was after aurielle died and my mother decided I needed a luna for pack reasons. I didn’t want
her, I didn’t want to marry her. But I agreed. I was understanding during that time. This time, I won’t be
I stepped into the small compound, and immediately heard the sound of my mother.
What is she doing here? She was arguing with someone, I’m guessing her mother–in–law. I sighed and rushed to where the sound was. The backyard. My grandmother was in a wheelchair, having lost her ability to walk and use most of her body due to a virus.
She looks tired but determined.
My mother is leaning over her, arms planted on her hips. “-he is going to miss out on the best thing in his life, and i cannot consider myself a good mother if I let that happen.”
My grandmother laughs. “You aren’t a good mother in the first place. You should want your son’s happiness. Instead, you’re yelling at me like I’m a child. I didn’t want my son to marry you. And this is why?”
I stepped closer, calling both their attention to me.
“Mom, why are you here?”
“I’m preventing a crisis. If you divorce Aurielle, you will hate yourself for it. A girl like that doesn’t give second chances, she doesn’t take back someone who would throw her out while she’s pregnant!”
I felt enraged, and my grandmother’s stunned expression added to that feeling.
“She’s pregnant.”
I shook my head. “She isn’t. Aurielle lies a lot. She lies constantly to make people feel sympathy. But she is not pregnant. I don’t care how many doctors she pays to lie for her. She is not pregnant. Grandma, Aurielle wants a divorce. I came here-”
My grandmother raised her hands to silence me. She turned to my mother. “Get out. My grandson is here. He needs someone
reasonable to understand him. So leave. Go back to my son.”

My mother shook her head. “No, you are going to tell him-”
“You’re adding to my stress. If you won’t leave, then go and wait inside the house.”
Mom turned to me, her eyes asking if this was what I wanted. I didn’t look at her. She laughed bitterly.
“Alright then, listen to her. See where that gets you. I’ll leave, but note, Portia?” she said, calling grandma by her first name
“This isn’t over. This is not over,” she stormed off after that, and we both sighed.
My grandma opened her arms for me to hug her, I know that move hurt her. So I bent down to make it easy for her.
“Matthias, my beautiful grandson. Sit, sit. Talk to me.” She softly rubbed my back, then winced before placing her hands back on her lap.
I smiled, feeling normal for the first time since Aurielle slammed divorce papers in my face.
I reached for one of the chairs set around a white table, which she used to use for garden parties.
I pulled it close to her wheelchair and dropped down into it.
“Tell me everything.
And so I did. I told her from the point where Aurielle requested for a divorce, the way she’d shouted at me, demanding I sign those
papers. And how I viewed our marriage as a punishment for her. For what she did to Nerissa.
I poured it all out to my grandmother. And waited for her response. She thought about my words carefully, showing me how
much attention she’d paid. I waited patiently until she said something.
“Isn’t this marriage punishment for you?”
I frowned. In what way?
“Think about it. Aurielle, if I’m not mistaken, she’s the one who won‘
I turned to fully face her. “How come?”
“Think about it. She got rid of your mate, and she got to marry you and become Luna. How is that punishing her? And now she’s
faking a pregnancy to lie to you. If she were truly pregnant, she’d be flashing it all around for everyone to know. Please, Matthias, let go of that crazy woman. You deserve better than to be tied to her. Don’t make her win. Don’t give her the power to say you
fought for her.”
Those words struck me. She’s right. Nerissa’s gone, and Aurielle got to be my wife. How am I punishing her? We’ve even slept together. She’s… and now she’s acting cold and in charge all because i won’t sign those papers,
I almost laughed. I’ve been stupid.
