Chapter Twenty–Two: Aurielle DuVall
My father protested. “Why? Is she not meeting your needs? I know it’s strange for a luna to not have a child after three years of marriage, but surely she’ll have one soon.
Firstly, damn that man to hell. How am I supposed to have a child when Matthias uses condoms, and the one time he doesn’t, I end up being branded a liar for ending up pregnant. How is this my fault? They all expect too much from me.
I ignored my parents and stood. “Are you being honest? You signed those papers?”
He nodded, taking bites of his steak. He cut another piece but stopped, looking up at me. “You don’t deserve the title of luna. You don’t deserve to be called Aurielle Crowe. You’re worth less than the dirt on the ground.”
He was being cruel on purpose. There was no need to say something like that. There was no need to undermine me. Does he have any clue what I’ve done for him? Putting my life on hold for three years, he doesn’t even know the payment plans for any of his servants, he doesn’t know who fixes his documents when he carelessly throws them somewhere. Assuming he’s smart enough to handle everything. I’ve done my part as Luna.
But arguing would make it seem like I’ve changed my mind. Matthias knows that. He’s waiting for my reaction. I gave him a polite bow.
“Thank you. It was an honor being married to you.”
“I can’t say the same.”
Breathe, Aurielle. This means no filing for a summons, no one to contest me for the divorce. This is the best news I’ve gotten all
day.
I sometimes forget that Matthias isn’t the only one blinded by Nerissa. Had I remembered that, I would have expected what came
next.
A rough hand grabbed my shoulder, turning my body around, only for another hand to come crashing down on my face.
My ears rang, and I stumbled. I grabbed the nearest chair to keep it from hitting my ribs. It struck my elbow instead, and I fell to
the ground. I was…. well, I was in a lot of pain. I heard arguing.
Screaming, and someone was throwing something. I brought my hand up to touch my face.
Finally, the ringing stopped, and I could hear clearly.
“You can’t divorce her. You can’t do that! “My father roared in anger.
My face immediately swelled up, and my vision blurred. He hit me–but for the first time in front of Mattias.
In a daze, I thought I saw Mattias‘ face filled with concern.
“You can’t tell me what I can and cannot do. You can’t come into my house, and slap my fucking wife. Do you have any idea how

this reflects on me? What possessed you to do that?!” Matthias’s voice was louder than my father’s. It’s the first time my dad has
shown his true colors in front of Matt. Matthias punished me a lot over the years, he’s had a habit of grabbing my
tightly, but he never hit me. He wasn’t the type to beat a girl.
Even if he hated her. Hence why he opted for punishments.
My parents have been civil around him because they’re all out of their retirement money, and I’ve been giving them a settlement
to keep them alive and well.
Divorcing Matthias would mean that the money would stop. I’m guessing he couldn’t control himself. My father had to act like
the bully he is. In front of the servants and Matthias,
If someone slapped me and Matthias did nothing, it would make him look bad.
The sting felt like nothing when I disassociate myself from the situation. I made myself get up, grab my phone, and bag. I
wobbled, my vision spinning.
Hands latched onto my waist, and I flinched. Moving my elbow in a way that made it hurt.
“Relax, the servants will have your injuries checked.” Matthias’s tone was soft. “Can you walk?”
I nodded, but my head felt heavy.
“Liar,” he said quietly, before I knew what was happening, he was brushing an arm under my knees and carrying me bridal style. A really stupid part of me felt something.
My heartbeat got faster, but then again, I just got hit by a two–hundred–pound beta wolf. That warrants an increase in pulse.
I shut my eyes, and Matthias took me to my room. My vision seems clearer now. He placed me down on the bed, and two servants
arrived.
“Treat her, make sure she’s okay.” That was it, then he left. A small act of kindness. But was it really?
He didn’t ask how often this happened. When something like this happens, you follow up with questions, but he didn’t. He did his part as the good alpha. He- I’m guessing- kicked my parents out, and helped me to my bedroom.
That was where his obligations ended. I caught a glimpse of the divorce papers as the servants checked on me.
He actually signed them. We’re getting divorced.
It feels… bittersweet.
