A second wave of weakness hit me. This wasn’t a tantrum. This wasn’t Sabrina trying to get my attention.
This was her saying goodbye.
For a second, my heart caught in my throat.
“Sabrina?” I whispered, already crossing the room. “Are you back? Please, don’t disappear like that again.”
I flung the door open.
And someone rushed into my arms. Except it wasn’t Sabrina.
It was Betty.
My hands tensed at her waist. “What the hell are you doing here?”
She looked up at me with tear–filled eyes, her voice trembling. “I figured you’d come here… You weren’t at the casino or the Valez mansion, and I got worried. Archie, where did you go? I thought you left me.”
Her voice cracked. “I’m pregnant. I can’t take that kind of stress.”
I didn’t have time for this. I pushed past her. “I’ve got something to do. Don’t follow me.”
“Archie, we’re married! You can’t just walk away. Stop chasing that whore! You’re mine now!”
She grabbed my arm like her life depended on it.
I turned, eyes sharp. “Let me go.”
Her grip tightened.
I snapped.
“Stop being a bitch, Betty,” I bit out. “Haven’t you gotten everything you wanted already? Or were you seriously naive enough to think I’d actually marry my uncle’s sloppy seconds?”

She reeled back like I slapped her.

“Our marriage was a show. A punishment. For what you did to me before. And now the curtain’s down.” I shoved her off me, hard.
“Get the fuck out of my way before I make you.”
Her voice shook. “What show? What the hell are you talking about?”
I didn’t answer or look back. Because every second wasted with her was a second not spent finding Sabrina.
I pulled out my phone. “Get me everything you can on Sabrina Marcellus–where she’s been, what she’s done in the last 72 hou And book me the next flight to Vegas. The fastest one available.”
“Yes, boss.”
Betty was still wailing behind me as I got into a cab.
As the taxi rolled past Times Square, I saw a couple kissing under the mistletoe. Hands on each other like nothing else existe
I remembered when that was us. Sabrina and me.
Before I fucked it all up.
