Chapter 12 She Would Surely Be Happy
Upon hearing the commotion, the housekeeper rushed over, persistently knocking on the door. “Mr. Mayer, what’s wrong? Please, open the door.”
Baug!
Something struck the door, followed by a guttural, car–splitting shout. “Get out!”
The housekeeper was anxious, but she dared not open the door at that moment.
Donovan’s temper was quite frightening, and she knew it well.
She didn’t dare to linger by the room’s entrance, fearful that if Donovan were to emerge suddenly and spot her, well.
The housekeeper felt a chill run down her spine.
At sunrise, the housekeeper prepared breakfast as per the usual schedule.
Donovan descended the stairs, catching the eye of the housekeeper, who quickly averted his gaze. “Mr. Mayer bei ready.”
Donovan walked over and took a seat by the table. He remained silent, his fork untouched for a long while
The housekeeper stood quietly to one side, stealing a glance at him.
“I’m giving you two months off, but your salary will continue as usual,” Donovan turned his head, and the housekeeper nodded in understanding upon meeting his gaze.
“Mr. Mayer, once you’re finished eating, I’ll clean up for you—”
Donovan closed his eyes. “Leave.”
Five minutes later, Donovan was the only one left in the mansion.
When he picked up the buns, he couldn’t manage to eat even a single bite.
He slowly rose and ascended the stairs, gently pushing open the door to Shelby’s bedroom.
Donovan stood at the door for a moment before making a trip to the bathroom. His gaze fell on her toothbrush, pausing for a few seconds before he returned to the bedroom.
He picked up Shelby’s pillow and walked to his own bedroom. He moved his own pillow to one side, then placed Shelby’s pillow next to it.
Callum stood by his car, gazing at the mansion in front of him, pacing back and forth with his phone pressed to his ear.
A few seconds later, the other party picked up.
“Mr. Mayer, I’ve arrived,” said Callum.
The deep voice of the man at the end came through. “Got it.”
After hanging up the phone, Callum took a deep breath. Soon enough, Donovan’s figure appeared in his sight.
He was dressed in a black suit. Callum noticed that Donovan had worn the same tie that day as he did before he left the country.
Seeing him approach, Callum quickly opened the car door. Once Donovan was seated, Callum asked, “Mr. Mayer, today’s Tenbee Business Conference meeting is being held at Sinburn Tower. After the meeting. Mr. Maynard hopes to have a chance to meet with you.”

Callum glanced at Donovan’s face in the rearview mirror. The latter’s expression was mild and indifferent.
After a brief pause, Donovan finally responded, “All right, you plan it.”
Subconsciously, Callum sighed in relief, focusing intently on the road ahead.
Tenbee Business Conference was hosted every three years and would attract many influential figures every time.
Donovan was seated in the front row, his long legs crossed and hands intertwined.
The host on stage was delivering a speech, and he was quietly watching.
People around him were engaged in animated discussions, a lively scene that contrasted sharply with his demeanor. It was as if a barrier had formed between him and the rest of the world.
“Mr. Mayer, Vincent Maynard said as he took a seat next to him.
He couldn’t resist coming to see Donovan right away. Recently, his company had planned a project, and he wanted to g Donovan on board as an investor.
However, he couldn’t help but wonder why Donovan was alone. “Mr. Mayer, where’s your wife
Everyone who was anyone at the business meeting that day had brought a female companion along
Donovan stiffened, but Vincent didn’t notice.
“Last time, I saw your wife choosing a tie for you at Malwart Mall Vincent’s wife shared that with him after she turned home. She remarked that it seemed like Donovan and Shelby shared a strong bond, noticing that the latter was all smiles while selecting the tie.
Vincent said, “I heard from my wife that your wife spent quite a while going back and forth before making her choice.”
He didn’t notice Donovan’s tightened expression. From his chest pocket, he pulled out a card and handed it to Donovan “This is the all–access gold card for Malwart Mall. It’s a small token iny wife wanted to give to your wife.”
Vincent understood well that Donovan could obtain the item without his help, but by offering it to the latter, he was laying the groundwork for their upcoming collaboration.
However, Donovan was known for his decisive and swift actions in the business world, which intimidated many seasoned
Veterans
Vincent wasn’t sure if Donovan, known for being incredibly tough, would accept it.
Donovan finally spoke up. “On behalf of Shelby, I thank Mrs. Maynard.”
Vincent beamed joyfully. “Mr. Mayer, there’s no need for thanks.”
Donovan said, “I heard that your esteemed company is preparing to launch a proposal for a new real estate development in Northyard. I was wondering if you’re still in need of investors.”
I knew it was a good idea to approach him. It was Vincent’s first encounter with Donovan, and he found the man genuinely refreshing.
Vincent said, “To be honest, my visit here today is specifically to meet with you. I want to discuss this project with you. With the assistance of Mayer Group, I firmly believe that this project will be successfully concluded.”
Unbeknownst to him, Donovan didn’t catch a single word he said afterward. The man’s well–defined fingers were gently caressing the small card. Given Shelly’s personality, she would undoubtedly play this card with great joy and laughter.
Once the Tenbee Business Conference had concluded, Vincent got into the car.
He tapped his fingers against the car window, humming a tune as he observed the street scene outside.

He had been an entrepreneur for twenty years, yet not a single day had been as smooth as that day.
Quickly, his attention was snatched back by the ring of his cell phone. He answered the ce, and from the other end came his wife’s voice, which sounded a bit off. “Vincent, could you come home a bit earlier today to spend some time with me?”
His wife’s abnormal tone caused Vincent’s heart to jump. “What’s wrong? Are you not feeling well? Darling, I’ll be home right
away.
“It’s not exactly that. I just heard some distressing news.” His wife continued, “Mrs. Mayer, Shelby, has passed away.”
“What?” Vincent’s hand clutched the back of the chair, his eyes filled with unparalleled fear. I can’t believe it! If Shelby really is dead, then why didn’t Donovan… He even accepted the card and thanked me. I didn’t notice anything unusual in his expression either. “You must have heard wrong. It could be someone with the same name.”
“No, I didn’t. I have a deep impression of her. I just can’t handle it when someone who greeted me not long ago suddenly just… Suddenly, the other end went silent.
Vincent reassured. “Don’t overthink it. I’ll be home shortly.”
After speaking, he turned his head toward the entrance of Tenbee Business Conference’s venue, just then, he saw Don coming out.
Donovan straightened his suit and adjusted his wristwatch, then bent down to get into the car, just as he always di was nothing out of the ordinary.
Callum was driving, his gaze falling on the person reflected in the rearview mirror.
Donovan was making a phone call, but it seemed like the person on the other end wasn’t picking up. He tried calling several
more times.
“Mr. Mayer, about the Gosling family… Callum began but then hesitated.
Donovan said, “That sort of filth should be cleaned up.”
The next day, the person in power from Gosling Group was taken away by the police, as they had discovered his involvement in a homicide case from over a decade ago.
Then, Callum received a message from Donovan that the latter wouldn’t be coming to the office that day.
In the late afternoon, Callum received a partnership proposal delivered by Vincent’s secretary. Callum drove to meet
Donovan
The day was particularly sweltering. The moment Callum stepped out of the air–conditioned car, he felt as though he might melt from the intense heat.
After knocking on the door to Donovan’s home a few times, there was no response.
Callum tried calling Donovan, but no one answered.
Thus, he placed the folder in his armpit and keyed in the door code.
