Chapter 28 Do You Like My Sister
“Wesley,” he turned to his assistant. “Set up a lunch meeting for me with Mr. Mayer.”
What exactly was Donovan’s motive in signing Lamat
Has he looking for a stand–in? I won’t allow it!
Donovan wasn’t surprised when he received the invitation. The two arranged to meet at Gold Dust Restaurant. Oscar arrived
first.
He kept his eyes on the door, his lips pressed into a firm line. What if Donovan really had ulterior motives toward Lara?
He narrowed his gaze. No matter what the contract penalty was, he would get Lara out of her agreement with Mayer Group.
The door swung open, and Dopovan stepped in. Dressed in an impeccably tailored suit, he carried himself with his usual effortless elegance. He took a seat across from Oscar, who signaled the waiter.
Oscar looked at him. “The beef wellington here is exceptional. Would you like to try some, Mr. Mayer?”
“I prefer to get straight to the point, Mr. Ross.”
Oscar closed the menu and handed it back to the waiter. “Bring one of everything.”
Once the waiter left, Oscar rubbed his knuckles. “Mr. Mayer, have you taken a liking to my sister!”
Donovan was briefly stunned, then his gaze turned cold. “I have a wife,” he said evenly. “And she’s the only woman I ever loved.”
Oscar wasn’t entirely convinced.
Donovan leaned back, absentmindedly fingering the red string around his neck. “Don’t worry. I have no interest in Ms. Ross
Oscar nodded, though for some reason, unease still lingered in his chest. He had looked into Donovan’s past. His first wife, Shelby, had passed away from intestinal cancer over a year ago. Since then, no other woman had entered his life.
Still, Oscar couldn’t shake the worry that his naive sister would end up as someone’s stand–in.
The car pulled into the Ross residence’s garage. Oscar glanced out the window. The mansion was completely dark. His brows furrowed.
Is no one home! Today’s the sixth. Isn’t Harriet supposed to return home only on the terith?
Still, he didn’t think too much of it. He walked to the entrance and entered the passcode.
“Mr. Ross, we’ve been awarded the project,” his assistant reported.
Oscar nodded. “Good.”
Just as he stepped inside, a burst of confetti sprayed all over him.
“Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Oscar, happy birthday to you!” Lara’s voice rang out in lively tune.
That day was his birthday. And he had completely forgotten about it.
-Oscar.
“Oscar, here’s your gift!” Lara handed him a box with a wide grin. “Wishing you eternal youth! And may you find me a sister-
in–law soon!”
Inside was a Patek Philippe watch.
Oscar flicked her forehead. “You’re always joking around.”

After celebrating for a bit, Oscar returned to his room. He changed into a set of loungewear and, after some thought, decided to check in on Lara. In her room, Lara was glued to the TV, watching Chace’s latest hit drama.
Oscar glanced at the screen. The lead actor’s face was strikingly handsor -no wondr; he was so popular. Maybe he had been worrying too much.
Chace and Donovan were nothing alike. But Donovan’s face was certainly the kind that could cause trouble.
Oscar sat on the edge of her bed and gently ruffled her hair. “Lara”
She looked up.
Oscar met her gaze. “Try to keep your distance from your boss.”
Lara didn’t really understand, but she trusted Oscar’s judgment. Since she nodded in agreement, Oscar didn’t linger. “All right, I won’t keep you from your show. Get to bed soon–your dark circles are getting out of hand.”
*All right, all right. You sound just like Mom!” She grumbled, but Oscar could tell–she was his sister through and through.
After binge–watching until ten o’clock, Lara still wasn’t sleepy. For some reason, she really wanted to go on a vacation. Eventually, she drifted into a deep, disoriented sleep.
“Don, I really want to see Mount Killburn covered in snow,” she murmured.
A deep voice answered, “I’ll take you there.”
In her dream, she could see the metallic buttons on his shirt, even his hands–but no matter how hard she tried, his face remained blurred.
Don? Who’s Don?
Lara spent the night tossing and turning.
The next morning, the script reading meeting was scheduled. Lara arrived at the office on time. Outside, a crowd of fans had gathered, most of them hoping to catch a glimpse of Chace.
She had met with the original author before.
The Red was a suspense thriller. It didn’t rely on heavy horror elements, but its meticulous plot twists sent shivers down the spine. Especially the reveal of the final culprit–completely unexpected.
But what surprised her most was that the author was unbelievably cute. The contrast between his eerie storytelling and his soft appearance was strangely charming.
When Lara entered the meeting room, several young actors were already seated. They exchanged greetings as she found her designated spot. She sat down, flipped open her script, and began reading.
From the head of the table, the producer observed her. He had heard that Lara was personally chosen by Donovan Originally, the lead role was supposed to go to the rising actress from Redhole Entertainment. She had both popularity and solid acting skills. No one understood why Donovan had passed on her in favor of a newcomer.
