Chapter 48
Hosptial
The corridors were eerily quiet, the dim lights flickering slightly as a nurse moved with careful, measured steps. Her face was partially hidden behind a surgical mask, but her eyes darted around, scanning every shadow Sweat clung to her forehead and her breathing was uneven.
Room 201
She slowed as she approached the patient’s room, her heart hammering against her ribs. Two guards stond rigid outside the door, their sharp eyes locking onto her the moment she neared
“ID” One of them demanded, extending a gloved hand.
She pulled out her hospital employee badge with sweaty fingers, holding it up for them. The second guard studied it before narrowing his eyes
“Remove the mask”
She stiffened. “Excuse me?”
“You heard me, the second guard said, arms crossed over his chest. “We need to verify your identity mis”
Her fingers clenched around the strap of her clipboard. “Tm a nurse. I’m here to administer medication. You have no right to demand that.”
The first guard raised a brow. “Actually, we do. You’re going into a restricted patient’s room. We don’t take risks.”
Her jaw clenched. This is ridiculous. I have rounds to complete. If you keep wasting my time, the patient’s condition could worsen.”
The guards didn’t flinch. “Miss, we’re not letting you in until you remove the mask.”
Her nostrils flared as frustration bubbled to the surface. “Do I look like a damn threat? I’m carrying a tray of meds, not a gun!”
The first guard stepped closer, his voice low, edged with suspicion. “People hide all sorts of things behind masks.” Saying so he examines the tray.
A chill ran down her spine, but she forced herself to scoff, rolling her eyes. With a sharp tug, she ripped the mask down, revealing her face.
Satisfied?”
The guard stared for a second before glancing at his tablet, and cross–checking her ID with his data.
Then finally, he nodded.
“You’re clear. Go in.”
She yanked her mask back up, her fingers trembling slightly as she shoved open the door.
She could still
I feel their eyes burning into her back as she stepped inside.
Inside, the room was cold and sterile, the rhythmic beep of the heart monitor filling the silence. The patient lay still unconscious, a slow IV dup feeding into his veins.
The nurse didn’t move right away. Instead, she flicked her gaze to the glass panel in the door, catching sight of a guard watching her every move
Swallowing hard, she wiped her damp palms against her uniform. Then, she pulled out a syringe, carefully injecting the clear liquid into the IV drip. Her hands were steady, but her pulse was racing.
It was done.
She turned briskly, heading for the exit, forcing herself to walk not run. The moment she stepped out, she hurried down the corridor, her breath
Rehind her, the guard inside the room frowned.
Soon he heard a strange sound.
He turned toward the patient just as the body on the bed started to shiver violently. The beeping of the monitor spiked, erratic and wild.
“Shar” The guard slammed lus lund against the emergency button. The room flashed rest
The second guard didn’t hesitate, he bolted after the nurse.
Chapter 48
Doctors and nurses rushed into Room 201, their footsteps pounding against the floor. “What happened!” the lead doctor demanded as he shoved past the guards. The patient convulsed violently on the bed, his body trembling, his face ghostly pale. Monitors screamed warnings,
“Heartbeat at 140 BPM!” one nurse called out, voice tight with fear.
“Blood pressure is crashing–75 over 45” another shouted.
“Doctor, blood oxygen level is dropping! Its at 70% and falling
A sharp curse escaped the doctor’s lips. His gloved hands trembled as he grabbed a syringe. “This isn’t a normal reaction. Someone rampered with his IVT” His eyes darted to the drip bag
That’s when he realised.
“Poison.” The word left his mouth like a death sentence.
The guards stiffened. One of them took a step forward, his face draining of color. “Doctor, if you don’t save this kid,” his voice wavered, his hand tightening into a fist. Then we all, including you, won’t make it out of this hospital alive.”“
The doctor swallowed hard
Elan’s POV
The last memory I had of my husband was him finger–fucking me to sleep, and since then, I’d been avoiding him like the plague.
Not that Dante seemed to care
If anything, he’d been busier than ever these past few days, buried in endless meetings, phone calls, and whatever mafia business kept him occupied. He barely had a damn minute to breathe, let alone eat not that I was complaining
The more he was distracted, the easier it was to keep my distance.
I wasn’t ready to face him. Not yet. Because the truth was.. I didn’t know how to deal with what was happening between us.
The way he touched me.
The way he fucked me.
The way he made me feel like I belonged to him in every possible way,
It wasn’t just sex. It was sex with him.
And that terrilled me more than anything.
Because no matter how much I tried to ignore it, no matter how much I avoided him like a plague..
My body still craved him..
He made me feel things I had no control over. He made me want things I shouldn’t.
So, I stayed away.
I kept myself busy reading, pacing around the estate, glaring at my very unnecessary guards, and avoiding Dante’s presence like it would set me on
Fre
Tonight, I wouldn’t have a choice.
My sweetest mother–in–law had personally asked me to accompany Dance to a business party. I was ready to reject the offer, to come up with some excuse, but then. I saw the excitement in her eyes. She wanted the next Queen of Romano to be present. She wanted me to join her son.
And I just couldn’t bring myself to say no.
So, here I was
in an elegant, form–fating black gown, my hair styled to perfection, every inch of me sculpted into the image of the Mafia King’s wife.
Chapter 48
A title that still felt foreign on my tongue.
I had been informed that Dante would meet me at the venue, apparently, he had things to take care of. No surprises there. The man was consumed by his empire most of the time.
Mark was already waiting to drive me
With one last glance at my reflection,I turned on my heels and walked out
of the ro
топ.
“Oh my God, Young Madam, you look absolutely stunning!” Miss Milly gasped, her eyes sweeping over me from head to for
Beside her, Bell stood frozen, mouth hanging open. “Oh God, Elara. You look like fire. My brother is going to drop dead the moment he sees you.” She winked playfully.
I rolled my eyes at her dramaties. “Not that he would even notice me I said, over the past few weeks, we had grown closer bonding over our mutual dislike for Dante, though for entirely different reasons,
Bell snorted. “Oh, trust me. Elara. Tonight, he will
“I wish I could come with you,” Bell pouted. “But I don’t have a date, and let’s be real, I’m not exactly allowed at these kinds of events”
I smirked at her dramatic whming. “Poor you.” I teased, adjusting the bracelet on my wrist.
Bell groaned. Ugh, don’t rub it in. I swear, I would totally crash this party just to watch Dante lose his damn mind while others can’t stop eyeing
1 sighed, pushing down the flutter in my chest. I wasn’t doing this for Dante. This was for his mother. At least, that’s what I kept telling myself
