Chapter 1
“We need a break,” Avro blurted without looking up from the plate of pancakes I had made for breakfas
Despite understanding what a barak in a marriage meant. I swallowed hand and tinew him a funny look. “I think your tired some water,” I countercl with a umall smile but he didn’t blink; making me realize he was seriosis. He was sitting on the dining table in a perfect white cooperate shirt while his jacket hung at the back of the seat.
“What the hell are you talking about?” I asked and without giving him a second to respond, I tried defending my actions as his wife. “Okay–look, 1 know I overreacted last night but it was because you’ve been acting strange. You came homer past midnight and…and-

“So you were at work?” I asked him before dropping the fork to the cable. “Because I recall calling your office line I was told you left three hours earlier”
wasn’t at work. I was at Ashley’s

Ashley
You were at Ashley’s all night,” I reiterated calmly.
“She’s my colleague and the best female lawyer my firm has.”
“Shes also your ex–girlfriend. Need I remind you that?”
He said nothing in response to that and just dropped his fork and stood up, causing

table to creak..
“Where are you going!” I asked him despite knowing the response. He wasn’t just going to work, he was going to her because she was now his work. “We need to talk about this, Avro. I’m your wife and I deserve some respect”
“Respect?” he chuckled. “Then get your employees to do that.”
A lump formed in my throat because Avro was making jest of me–in my unemployed state. He made me become a housewife and now what?
“Do not bother making dinner or waiting for me,”
ne,” he said casually. “I will not be coming home tonight”
He took the jacket and was about to storm out when I asked him a question that I knew I would regret. “Are you sleeping with her?”
Avro paused and I waited for the man I married to shake his head in disgust and tell me I was saying trash but taking a tentative step toward the dining table, he watched me without an emotion in his face “Yes” he answered. “And not just that–she does it better”
Nothing prepared me for this–not even the morale that made me ask him that question. I looked around in a split second and shook my head “You’re right. Avro. We need a break”
My throat inched and 1 finished it. “I want a divorce.”
I never thought I was ever going to use that word because I’ve been the most patient and tolerable woman but now–1 could no longer hold it.
I was drowning and this time I needed to make a pick and so I picked me.
Avro said nothing but walked away, not to the door but to the hallway leading to our rooms. I exhaled audibly the moment he left the room because it felt like he was hally going to come to his senses but I was wrong. His footsteps became louder as he took well–calculated strides back to where I was. “Sign the divorce papers drop them on the table, and leave my house before I get back.”
Avro was waiting and with the intense pain birthed in my heart, I bent and signed on the empty space before dropping the per
Everything faded into nothingness and even the loud slam of the door didn’t help me. I fell to the chair, squeezing my chiffon shirt and holding my knees, my fingers grabbing the jeans I was wearing. I kept trying to act like was fine but tears threatened my eyes and my breathing pattern

I tucked my brown hair behind my ears, trying to take erratic breaths to stop whatever was happening to me but the throbbing pain in my chest
wasn’t stopping
I couldn’t do anything but sob into the air. His voice was still in my car, I could still remember the way he said those words like they weren’t going in torture me for the rest of my life. I gave Avro everything. Every single part of me I could find. I never pursued a career because he wanted me all

to himself at home. I went through the pain of incomplete sex whenever we made love because he didn’t want us making babies.
It hurt me to know that I lost him at the point that I thought I could change his mind. I quickly dialed my sister’s number because she was person I could run to. When my father was against my marriage. I didn’t give two fucks. I ran away because I knew I wanted Avro and the only person who I cared about to tell was Eve,
She picked up her call after one single try and her ever–sweet voice filled my ear.
“Elle, you think I can turn your room into a library! I’ve been meaning to call you but this” She paused. “Eleanori”
Without any warning, I burst into tears narrating every single thing that just happened to my big sister.
only
I could tell by her silence she was thinking on the other end of the line. “Oh my God, Elle Shit. I need you to come home. I’ll uh- I’ll book you the next flight and I’ll pick you but just come home.”
1 sniffed knowing how easy that seemed. My father disowned me the moment I got married to Avro Levendor. It never bothered me because I didn’t want to have a life where everything I worked for would be attributed to my father’s wealth.
I wanted a life for myself. A life with Avro and a life where I could be happy but I got none of that.
“You don’t have to worry about Father, Eve assured me. “You only have to worry about you, Eleanor You just need to be ready to start a life without him and you’ll be fine.” She paused for that to sink before she continued. “Are you ready for that?”

“Oh my God. Does Avro know about this?”
“No.” My sobs increased as I thought about how I was going to tell him last night. “He wasn’t home last night when I found our

“What are you going to do?” I asked my sister and she exhaled into the phone. “I’ll make arrangements. For now, I need you to packed and utt—she paused. “Do you have any important thing!”
“Just a bunch of chiffon tops and skinny jeans”
“File, Ineed you to leave his house now. Get a hotel or something and tomorrow, you’ll be here in California with us”
“Okay answered as fresh tears made its way down my cheeks. “Bye”
I hung up, about to breathe a huge sigh of relief when the phone rang again I answered, “Eve, you don’t have to worry about me.”
“I love one question though,” she resolved calmly. “Are you keeping his child?”
