Chapter 16

To be honest, I thought I could save some strength working from home but that’s just a facade
I turned to my laptop the moment it pinged and I swallowed hard. It was a notification from Dante about the records 1 asked him to pull.
I scoffed out in complete annoyance because I was wrong and everyone else including the prosecution was right.
This man did have a lot of things hidden from me as a private investigator but who the fuck lies to their lawyer?
1 continuously tapped on my laptop, sending a long message to James, asking him to get the Attorney, Rio to file a motion of discovery.
That would be our only chance at buying more time since the trial is ongoing and the prosecution had more than enough reasons to throw him behind bars for the rest of his life
We have no time and yet they keep making me go back in circles and end up with nothing.
I quickly reached for the glass beside me and raised it to my lips only to find out that the coffee

“So much for a day, I blurted out and gently hit my forehead. I needed a break but I couldn’t afford one
Not financially, but physically. I am stuck with trying to dig out a bunch of exculpatory evidence for my clients that my life itself needs evidence
that I still exist.
“Where’s it again?” I muered, looking around my table scattered with documents, sheets of paper, and images
was a way we could make:
I was trying to get a hold of the witness statement to see if there was a way we

Looking back at my screen, I frowned at how smart he must have thought he was Hoth he and his alibi were nowhere close to where they claimed to be and they really think the prosecution counsel wouldn’t be smart to verify?
I need to speak with Hin” I blurted, knowing it was kind of getting late. “It’s still evening.” I assured myself. “It will be quick and uh-
Just before I could dial his number, my phone buzzed and the caller ID revealed it was my dad.
“Oh my. I mattered accepting the call “Hi Dad!”
“Elle” He called out, bearing with a smile. How are you doing, baby?”
“Great” I answered sharply. “How’s it going with you?
“You don’t look too great.” He observed for a second before squinting. “You are at the office?”
I shook my head and then parted my lips to say something. I’m not at the office, Dad.”
“But you’re working
“At home,” Lansivered defeated by his sharp observations
“You’re not saying anything about coming home,” he continued. “What’s on your mind?”
I’m sorry Dad- I’ll come home as soon as I can tidy up this case.”
You know? You never tell me much about these cases.”
they
“That’s because most cases 1 work on are classified.” That may not be completely true but I can’t just sit around talking about these cases like th were nomul
These are cases of homicides, first–degree murders mostly, and really gruesome and infuriating stories. Those are not the type of stories I like to share over a sandwich and a glass of juice.
“I get it,” he answered without really getting it. I just wanted to be sure you’re okay, baby”

missed doing this since Abbie was born. It’s like his own way of trying to fill in the gap of being a single mother
“How’s Abbje?” I asked. “I can’t say I hope she isn’t disturbing you and Eve, cause really–I’d rather not be in that position.”
He burst into a small laughter and I joined him because it felt so good talking about my daughter this way.
It’s like with them. I do not have to worry about anything.
“Abbie is a
ca strong girl,” he told me. “You know she took your features.
I wish that was true but ult, it isn’t. Alsbor is nothing like me and sometimes I wish I could change the fact that whenever I see my daughter, the une prison Iier is Avro,
She looks so much like him, and the only feature she may have taken from me is the color of her eyes because honestly! Everything else screams
I’m also very glad she’s far away from me and she’s with the people I trust the most to give her a perfect life. I can’t imagine what would have happened if she had been right here when Avro showed up.
T’d have completely lost it and just overreactcil in a way that would have cost me my child,
Are you listening to mel
I shook my h
head. “Yes, Dail. I’m sorry, I just got carried away for a second.
“Abbie has a game today. Eve took her there a couple of minutes ago,
“Cai you remind me which of the games, again?” I asked, not wanting to feel bad about not knowing exactly the game my daughter was playing
“Ice skating,” he answered with no judgment.
Tur’s so wonderful.”
“She’s been showing a passion for football lately but Eve thinks she needs to focus on this one first,”
“Lagres
“Do you?”
1 laughed out loud and shook my head. Truth is, I trust whatever Eve thinks is best
I’m glad you ladies have that figured out. Let alone for me. I’d have her learn something tougher.”
“Like chess‘ Pool! Jec- Tad, Abbie is hot three”
“Doesn’t mean I can’t start training her to
My attention was diverted to the buzz of my phone. It was a private number but I knew Dante may be calling for something important
“Uh, Dad? I called. Thave to take this call right now, it’s important.
“Work calls!”
I gave a small nod and just as die was saying he loves me, Lended the call to pick up the incoming call.
“Dame”
