“But not a lift,” Jenner chirped and I warned her with my eyes. She was being to slippery, threatening to leak our private conversations to our father and well. I do not approve

She nodded sympathetically and reached for her glass of orange juice
It started with Jenner asking if I could give her a hill to some lunch outing with a bunch of friends but I couldn’t. The past week, it has been one meeting or the other and whenever I have even the slightest minute to myself, it always ends with me checking out one thing or the other.
“Wish you had even a munuse the other day.”
Dad grabbed his phone from the table, running his thumb over the screen. It didn’t take up to two seconds before he put the phone down and then booked at the both of us. “What’s going on!”

“It was you I wanted and guess who didn’t show up? You.”

it was meant to be fun and I told my friends I got my brother to join us. I didn’t say my father,” she explained and we all laughed.

“That too,” he mattered. “Jenner, I do not have to tell you how overwhelming the legal profession can be. Uh–how about you both talk things out?”
I chewed gently, thinking of ways to ignore Jenner but her hands made it to my thigh and she squeezed my knee. Her face brightened. “What do you say about a make–up outing!”
As much as I can’t seem to get Jenner to our me a break, I kind of love her perseverance, “I’ll sh–I’ll think about it.”
“Sometimes, I wish I had another sibling. Trust me, bugging you would have been the last thing on my mind.
Well, that was such a quick savitch.
“I’m sorry you couldn’t get one, thanks to mom
I can’t tell if it was my sarcasm or the tone but it made Jenner laugh but not my Dad who lost the love of his life quite early.
The next minutes passed with nothing but silence and the munching from three of us. I was glad all that blame–time was over and now I could just enjoy my food but I was definitely wrong
“Hey Jenner blurted like she just thought of something. There’s this dinner my friend invited me to. Do you want to–”
“No.”
My answer was stern and precise. I’m sorry Jenner but I’ve got work.
“Of course you do,” she answered. “God, I wish I could just-
“Exchange me for another sibling” Iqueried. “I’ve heard that a lot.”
“Truth is sometimes you make me regret being the only girl and not having another water or even–sister-in–law,” the added gently
I swallowed the chunk of food in my mail and just continued eating like I didn’t hear the latter pan. I know where Jenner is heading and dammit. I wish I could paita pause to her speech.
“Actually, she started and leaned clover. “Have you heard from Eleanor!”
My phone pinged on the table and 1 picked it up grateful for the chance to escape answering the I swipe my thumbs on the screen and stared right at the message notification from Nor Brown
