Chapter 8
On the day of the prenatal checkup, Alpha Lucas insisted on driving me to the hospital despite my attempts to hail a cab on my
own.
“Emily, I’m the puppy’s father. Let me be there for him. Please”
As if in response, the puppy kicked just as Alpha Lucas gently placed his hand on my belly. For a moment, the familiar warmth of his touch dissolved my defenses.
When I habitually moved to the passenger seat and opened the door, I saw Omega Camille.
She had lost a bit more weight, but her eyes still sparkled. I froze, turning to Alpha Lucas.

“What’s this about?”
Omega Camille coughed weakly, her voice faint. “Luna Emily, please don’t blame Lucas. I’ve been coughing a lot lately, and Lucas is worried about me.”
“I just wanted to see the Lucas’s Puppy. I probably won’t be around to meet him when he’s born,”
Her bony fingers grasped my arm, and I could feel the weight of her illness. I hid my emotions and opened the rear door.
Alpha Lucas visibly exhaled, as if relieved I hadn’t made a scene.
Ever attentive, he guided me into the car, his hands shielding my head and belly with the same care he’d always shown me.

In the hospital, Omega Camille watched the ultrasound with bright eyes.
“The baby is developing well and is nearing the due date. Mom and Dad, be sure to take good care, the obstetrician said.
Alpha Lucas and I both smiled and nodded in
response.
On the way back, Omega Camille’s spirits seemed lifted. She kept talking about me and the puppy.
“Emily’s puppy looks so cute, and the doctor says he’s very healthy.”
“That’s great,” she said, her tone filled with envy, prompting Alpha Lucas to gently pat her head in comfort.
“With such good parents, the baby will surely

be very happy.”
“Oh, I’m so sorry, Emily, I forgot that your parents aren’t around to be with you.”
Her abrupt change of topic made her intention clear to me.
“Omega Camille,” I said, my tone icy, “you really don’t need to do this.”
She tilted her head, feigning innocence. “Emily, what’s wrong? I was just
reminiscing… didn’t Your parents always want you?”
I snapped.
“How can someone who’s dying still be so sharp–tongued?”
It was indeed harsh to speak this way to

someone on the brink of death, but I couldn’t hold back.
Alpha Lucas’s voice grew stern. “Luna Emily, that was uncalled for”
I glared at him through the rearview mirror, the heat of my anger burning away any guilt. “Do you think her words are any less hurtful?”
The car fell into a heavy silence, and no one spoke again.
