Chapter 2
As soon as I opened the door, a remote control slammed onto the floor in front of me, breaking into several pieces.
“Are you trying to starve me? Coming back so late, Jason growled from the couch, glaring at me.
In the past, I would’ve lectured him, but today, I didn’t say a word. I simply walked into the kitchen and started cooking.
By the time I brought the food out, Eric had also emerged from the bedroom.
So he was home.
I served their meals as usual, placing them next to them, but Jason didn’t take his. He

started picking and choosing at the food on his plate.
Eric scolded softly, “Eat your food properly.”
“I’m tired of eating the same things every day, Jason complained, glancing at me.
“Mom, you really should learn how to cook better. After all these years, your food always tastes the same.”
My hand froze mid–air as I picked up some food.
Back then, to make sure they had a balanced diet, I even got a nutritionist certificate. Jason used to always say my cooking was great.
Many parents even asked me for advice on how I raised such a well–behaved child.

Now, looking at Jason’s disdainful face, I was silent.
No matter how good something was, it became tiresome over time.
“I’m not eating” Jason said, throwing his chopsticks down and heading back to his
room.
I was left alone with Eric.
Eric took the initiative to serve me a piece of pork ribs. “This afternoon, Jason said he was hungry and ate something outside, so he’s probably not hungry now.”
I ignored the ribs and focused on my plain rice.
“About today, don’t misunderstand me. I

didn’t know Maggie was Jason’s homeroom teacher in advance, Eric said suddenly.
“I understand,” I replied coolly, not calling out his lie.
He had never taken the initiative to pick up Jason from school. It wasn’t until three months ago, one night when I had a fever and couldn’t get out of bed, that I asked him for help. Eric reluctantly went.
And it was after that day that he suddenly insisted on taking over the school run.
He said I was working too hard in the mornings, and I was happy that he cared about me–only to realize it was all to see Maggie.
How naive I was.

Now that I thought about it; he only took Jason to school, while I still had to wake up at 5 a.m. every day to prepare breakfast for them.
Eric seemed about to say something, but his vibrating phone interrupted him.
He opened it, upon seeing something, a smile spread across his face.
In the past, when Jason didn’t eat properly, Eric had set the rule that no one could use their phone during meals. But this year, that rule had changed.
Perhaps my gaze was too direct, because Eric put down his phone and said, “It’s a
school notice about ordering uniforms. Give me Jason’s size.”
“Why I didn’t know…” I said, only halfway

through my sentence did I remembered that Eric had added me to the parent group and then had me leave it.
I lowered my head. “I understand.”
Suddenly, I felt something cold on my forehead. I jumped back, startled, and looked up at Eric in surprise.
Eric’s expression darkened for a moment. “I was just checking if you had a fever.”
I froze for a second, then realized he was wondering why I hadn’t asked any more questions. Normally, I would have probed deeper into such small matters.
I would have even made a fuss.
But not now. In just half a month, I would be leaving. There was no point in making myself

uncomfortable.
I stood up. “I’m full.”
Without another word, I headed to the kitchen, avoiding Eric’s hesitant look.
