Chapter 7
Without giving Eden a chance to respond, I dropped those words and turned to leave the hospital.
There was still much to do regarding the divorce.
Thankfully, when we first got married, I made sure to leave myself a way out. The house was under my name.
After notifying the property management of the situation, I had all of Eden’s belongings packed up and dumped right at the doorstep.
My phone buzzed constantly, as Eden flooded me with calls and messages.
I ignored him, and, growing irritated, I

eventually blocked his number altogether.
But just as I sank into the couch, there was a knock on the door.
It was Eden’s parents.
When they saw me open the door, Eden’s mother immediately flashed me a smile, trying to charm me.
“Vivi, I heard you and Eden had a fight?”
“Oh, come on, every married couple has their spats, right? Couples fight and make up, that’s just how it is. There’s no need to let something so small get in the way.”
As she spoke, Eden’s father nodded along fervently.
“Exactly, Vivi, Eden’s mother and I were the

same way!”
“Besides, you and Eden have been together so long. You’re living a good life now, why would you want to divorce?”
I leaned against the doorframe, listening to their words like a series of firecrackers going off.
Truth be told, I’d always known.
The reason Eden’s parents were so kind to me was because of my wealth.
But I didn’t mind.
I had what they desired, and they possessed what I craved.
That kind of mutually beneficial relationship would last far longer than a simple one–sided

connection.
The sad part was, they were never satisfied.
I cut off Eden’s mother’s incessant chatter.
“Mrs. Roffe, stop pretending.”
“You know exactly what Eden is doing.”
She froze, as though someone had just strangled her words.
After a long pause, she finally shifted her gaze, awkwardly forcing a smile.
“What are you talking about, Vivi? I don’t understand…”
“Alright, alright. If there’s anything you don’t understand…”

“You can discuss it with my company’s legal team later. They’ve been off work for a while, to be honest.”
“Mrs. Roffe, instead of wasting time here talking to me, you’d be better off going home. and coming up with a solution.”
“Murder… that’s a pretty serious accusation.”
My voice was soft, almost amused.
A childhood filled with unhappiness taught me more than just how to be independent.
It taught me how to protect myself.
I once craved the happiness and warmth they and Eden had given me.
But that didn’t mean I became lost in it.

On the contrary, when I realized that warmth was nothing but a lie, my anger cleared my mind.
I’ve always been someone driven by a thirst for revenge and an overpowering sense of self–interest.
The expressions on Eden’s parents‘ faces immediately changed.
“Viola, what are you saying? Murder? I don’t know anything about that!”
“If you keep slandering my son like this, believe me, I’ll sue you for defamation!”
Eden’s father’s voice was loud, his face turning bright red.
His mother, not one to back down, finally shed her pretense, glaring at me with gritted

teeth.
“Viola, do you think you’re so special?”
“A woman who spends all her time out there in the spotlight while my son is stuck at home taking care of things!”
“That’s bad enough, but you won’t even give him a child? What kind of woman are you?!”
“I’ll tell you this! If it wasn’t for Eden, do you think I would’ve ever let you into our home?! Pah!”
Her spit was flying everywhere, and her face twisted with rage.
But it was a pity for her; I had heard far worse insults.
In this society, being a woman and building

a career is far more difficult than anyone realizes.
Her insults didn’t bother me in the slightest, they felt like nothing more than a scratch.
I waited quietly for them to finish, then coldly said,
“Are you done?”
“Then get out. This is my house.”
Without hesitation, I slammed the door shut, but their curses still echoed from the outside.
Annoyed, I called the property management.
Half an hour later, everything outside had quieted down.

I thought I could finally bring this farce to an end with Eden.
But late that night, I received an unfamiliar call.
As soon as I answered, I heard Eden’s sobs.
“Vivi, I know I was wrong, really. Please, please don’t divorce me…”
