In the dead of night, I dragged my exhausted body back home.
Just then, the doorbell rang unexpectedly.
As I opened the door, a large bouquet of roses almost fell into my arms.
Rolf stood at the threshold, his eyes red–rimmed. “Clary, please let me explain…”
I was about to slam the door shut, but he quickly stepped inside. “Just one chance, the last chance.”

“Clary, it’s not what you think,” Rolf rushed forward, desperately trying to explain. “I… I was forced, it was all Faye’s doing…”
I shook my head gently, pity in my eyes. “Rolf, do you know? The frantic look on your face now is so different from the confident one you had when you wrote that recommendation letter for Faye.”
“I can explain!” He stepped forward to grab my hand, but Stuart, passing by, yanked me behind him.

“Your girlfriend?” I looked down and chuckled lightly.

abandoned during the tsunami, or the one you plan to throw away once you’re done using her?”

sorrow.
“I don’t want Faye anymore,” he grabbed the edge of my clothes, his voice trembling with tears. “Let’s start over, okay? I promise…”
I gently pulled his hand off me. “Promise?”
My laughter was filled with sharp sarcasm. “Promise that I should be grateful and accept your charity just because you say you’ll change your mind? Or promise me another chance to be betrayed by you?”

I turned and took the keychain from around my neck, the only gift he had ever given me.
“Go on and live your life with Faye.” I held the keychain out in front of him. “You two make a perfect match.”
