I clearly heard the nurse say, when I was unconscious, that our child had a birthmark under their ear! This child has the same one! Luna can’t have children, so you gave her mine, didn’t you?”
My voice trembled as I gripped the phone tightly. The child’s smile on the screen seemed all the more piercing through my tear–blurred vision.
Andy’s face turned even paler, his teeth. clenched as he tried to reason with me.
“Sarah, that’s not our child. If you want a baby, we can have another. That one is gone, and that’s that.”

Andy held my limp body. Before I completely lost consciousness, I heard him calling my name frantically, as if he still loved me.
When I woke up, I found myself lying in a hospital room, surrounded by the faint smell of antiseptic.
Andy was sitting by the bed, his voice hoarse as soon as he saw I was awake.
“Sarah, you’re finally awake.”
