Chapter 3
Hearing his ridiculous words made me laugh out of frustration.
“Ewen Wood, do you think I’m some kind of joke? Before I married you, I was one of the top commercial designers in the industry”
“I
Can’t land a deal with Hardy Group, so what’s wrong with learning from others?”
Ewen Wood gave a knowing smile.
“I told you, someone like you would never catch Hardy Group’s eye. I was just worried you’d get scammed.”
“If you want some extra work, I can have Felecia Ford get you some small gigs.”

I slammed the laptop shut and looked at him expressionlessly.
“Do you think the earth would stop spinning without Felecia Ford?”
“As for why I want to earn some extra money, isn’t it because I’m afraid you’ll cut off my allowance?”
The air froze at the mention of “allowance.”
Ewen Wood awkwardly rubbed his face.
“Manvi Nelson, you’re bringing up old issues again.”
He didn’t know that I had never forgotten about the allowance matter.
That day, Ewen Wood suddenly called, whining about wanting some trendy mango

crepe cake.
I felt sorry for Ewen working overtime so often, so if he asked for something within my means, I’d always try to do it.
So, even though I’d just had an abortion, I gritted my teeth and went out to get the cake.
Five hours in the scorching sun, I finally got the last mango crepe of the day and rushed to his company.
Who knew that after not eating or drinking all day, my low blood sugar would hit, and I collapsed in the crowded intersection.
A kind passerby rescued me and insisted I should eat some of the mango crepe to boost my sugar levels.

I thought, being an old couple, we often shared a piece of cake or even a cup
of tea.
I didn’t think it would be a big deal if I took a bite of the cake.
Limping, I delivered the cake to Ewen Wood and told him all the mishaps I had gone through.
After talking, I snuggled into Ewen Wood’s arms, waiting for comforting words.
Unexpectedly, Ewen flew into a rage and shoved me away, scattering the cake on the ground.
“Manvi Nelson, are you that desperate? You took a bite, so how’s anyone else supposed to eat it?”
“Lazing around at home is one thing, but you

can’t even handle a simple task. You’re not getting your allowance this month.”
Surrounded by curious coworkers, I blushed with embarrassment, not knowing what to do.
“Honey, I’m sorry, please don’t be mad. I’ll queue again tomorrow.”
His assistant hurried over, pulling me toward the restroom.
“Calm down, President Wood. I’ll help her change; she’s bleeding.”
I was still puzzled about his behavior today when I heard Felecia Ford’s coy voice outside.
“President Wood, maybe she was being petty, knowing the cake was meant for me,

and got jealous?”
I saw the assistant’s awkward look and immediately understood why she was in such a hurry to get me away.
Ewen Wood cleared his throat and said firmly, “Manvi Nelson isn’t like that; she didn’t know the cake was for you.”
“She’s just a bit clumsy, but she means well.”
Hearing Ewen Wood playing both sides, using my emotions while defending me, left me feeling conflicted.
Felecia Ford couldn’t stand Ewen defending me and huffed in frustration.
“So you’re saying I’m the bad one? I was just joking.”

Ewen quickly laughed, ingratiatingly trying to appease her.
“Nonsense, I just docked her allowance for you. That should make you feel better.”
Ewen Wood’s sycophantic behavior was truly disgusting.
Knowing I was in the restroom, Felecia Ford raised her voice to ensure I heard her.
“Oh wow, a woman living off her husband like that–without his money, what would she do?”
“Wish I had a husband who doted on me. Unlike me, where President Wood’s money for his little darling goes, I’m the one earning it.”
Before she could finish, Felecia’s phone

chimed with a payment notification.
“Okay, okay, stop being jealous. This money isn’t going to her, but to reward you with a new handbag.”
“That’s more like it. Come by my place tonight for a proper reward.”
