Chapter 5
“Director White, someone is here to see you,” a colleague poked her head in.
Without looking up, I took another sip of my coffee. Three months–it hadn’t taken long to rise from a regular reporter to the head of the investigation team.
“They said it’s an old acquaintance.”
I set the cup down and raised my eyes.
Anthony stood in the doorway, looking haggard, with my son trailing behind him, head lowered in silence.
It was almost poetic. The once–dashing financial prodigy, who had thrown money around carelessly, now stood before me in a

wrinkled suit, scruffy beard, and the air of a fallen middle–aged man.
“Ma… Marie, look at our son. He’s lost weight.”
I raised an eyebrow. “Oh, so now you remember you had an ex–wife?”
“No, you are still my wife! I haven’t signed the divorce papers!” He spoke quickly, almost desperately. “I know I was wrong. Please, come back. I’ll do whatever you say!”
I let out a soft laugh.
“Really? And
what about Fiona?”
“I’ve cut ties with her completely!” His voice was firm. “The company has pulled out of the kindergarten investment!”

I picked up the latest investiga… from my desk. “Afraid the fake investme might be exposed, right?”
His face went pale.
“What do you mean by that?”
“Just what I said.” I leisurely flipped through the pages. “You played it smart, drained the education fund, then inflated assets with fake investments.”
“Ho… How do you know?”
“I’m a top reporter. I’ve got my ways.” I sneered. “So, what’s it going to be? Are you willing to walk away with nothing, or should I expose all of this?”
His legs gave out, and he collapsed to the floor.

“Marie! Please, give me a chance! If the company collapses, we’re all finished!”
I glanced at my son, who was standing quietly beside us. “Nice work, teaching your son what kind of man his proud father really is.”
“Mom…” My son’s eyes were red, “I’m sorry, 1…
I pressed the intercom button on my desk. “Security, there’s someone causing a scene in my office.”
“Marie!” Anthony scrambled to his feet and lunged toward me, “You can’t be this heartless!”
Two security guards entered, efficiently restraining him.

“Director White, should we call the police?”
“No need,” I straightened my suit, “He’s the father of my child, after all. Let’s show some mercy”
“You wait!” He struggled and yelled, “This isn’t over between us!”
I watched coldly as he was dragged out, his suit now covered in dust. The once–arrogant CEO, reduced to this–today, he was nothing.
The next day, a thick legal letter was delivered to his office: sign the divorce papers within 24 hours, or all evidence will be handed over to the prosecutor’s office.
“Marie, he signed!” A colleague rushed in, holding the document. “And he voluntarily gave up all his assets!”

I gently ran my fingers over the investigative report on my desk.
This was just the beginning.
That afternoon, major media outlets received an anonymous tip: A well–known financial company was involved in an education fund fraud scheme!
The stock market plummeted once more.
“Marie, do you think this is going too far?” Luna asked, worried. “After all, he’s still the father of your child…”
I opened my phone gallery and clicked on a photo.
It was a letter of apology from my son, which read: “Mom, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have

believed Fiona’s lies.”
But it was already too late.
“A liar doesn’t deserve to be a father,” I said coldly.
Three days after the news broke, Anthony’s company was ordered to cease operations for a full audit.
Several major clients filed collective lawsuits, demanding the return of their investments.
“Marie! You’ve won!” He burst into my office, looking crazed.
“I have nothing left! Are you happy now?!”
I slowly wiped the coffee he had knocked over from my desk. “Security!”

“Wait!” He suddenly dropped to his knees and grabbed my legs, “For the sake of
our son, please help me! I’ll give you the house, the car–anything! Just retract those reports!”
I looked down at him, my gaze as cold as ice. “When you left me with nothing all those years ago, did you ever think about today?”
The security guards rushed in to drag him away, but he clung to my pants leg desperately. “I know I was wrong! I really do! Please, give me another chance!”
I crouched down, my voice low. “I already gave you a chance. You just didn’t value it.”
“Director White!” A colleague rushed in, “Fiona’s downstairs, saying she’s going to expose all of Anthony’s illegal activities!”

I smiled.
The curtain was finally falling on this drama.
“Perfect timing,” I straightened my jacket.
“Let her come up. Let her see how the old hag she once trampled on is living now. Let her see how wonderful my life is now.
Watching Anthony collapse onto the floor, I suddenly realized–this revenge had been a perfect win–win.
Not only had I reclaimed my dignity, but I had also found myself again.
