I curled my lips into a mocking smile.
I couldn’t even imagine what might have happened between them last night. The mere thought threatened to unravel me.
But I could no longer withstand the fever and fainted.
When I woke up again, it was the sound of the phone ringing that disturbed my rest. I felt parched, licked my dry lips, and answered the call.
“Lovelyn Jones, didn’t I ask you to bring me food?”
I was taken aback, his reproach blasted through the phone, “Daisy’s stomach is

acting up from hunger. Are you doing this on purpose? You know she has a sensitive stomach, yet you deliberately didn’t bring her food.”
He expressed a sense of heartache, “How did you become like this?”
My throat felt like it was on fire. I didn’t want to deal with him any longer, so I simply hung up the phone.
A large glass of ice water helped to somewhat quell the heat raging inside me.
Feeling slightly better, I quickly grabbed a ride to the hospital. After the doctor examined me, he said, “You’re not taking care of yourself. If you had come later, you might have lost your voice.”
He wrote a prescription, handed me the

medicine, and sent me for an IV drip.
Sitting in the infusion hall, I watched the liquid drip through the IV, when a familiar voice caught my attention.
Instinctively, I turned my head and saw Gareth Baxton half–supporting Daisy Morgan as they walked into the hospital.
Just as they were about to pass by me, I called out to them, “Gareth Baxton, what are you doing?”
Seeing me, he confidently blamed me,
“Isn’t it because of you? Daisy’s stomach is acting up, and I have to get her to the doctor quickly.”
He glanced to the side, noticed I was on IV, and I thought he might show some concern for me. Instead, he said, “Your drip is almost

done. Go get some porridge for Daisy afterward, and make it quick.”
Daisy Morgan looked delicate, “Sis Lyn, you don’t mind, do you? My health just can’t keep up, always troubling Gareth.”
Hearing her say this, Gareth Baxton impatiently said to me, “Lovelyn Jones, can you stop being so petty? Daisy is sick, and you’re still being so stingy.”
But I hadn’t uttered a word, and just like that, he condemned me.
I stared fixedly at the necklace around Daisy Morgan’s neck, my eyes stinging and swelling.

She spoke with a coy lilt in her voice.
Gareth Baxton shot me an uneasy glance, feigned scolding, “Why are you telling her this? Is your stomach not hurting? Go see the doctor already!“.
With that, he and Daisy Morgan strolled away in front of me.
I clenched my fists, truly fed up with this life. where I am constantly humiliated.
My twenty–year–old self could never have predicted that ten years later, Gareth Baxton and I would come to despise each other.
After all, back then, my wish was for us to be together forever.

As the last drop of medicine fell, I decisively pulled out the needle.
Arriving at Noah Baxton’s school just as the bell rang, I saw him from afar. He turned away, wearing the same look of impatience. as his father.
Pushing through the crowd to get to him, I asked, “Noah, would you consider going to school at Grandma’s with me?”
Even as I asked, I lacked confidence. Sure enough, Noah Baxton laughed exaggeratedly at my words, “I’m not going! If you want to go, go by yourself. Just don’t come back, seeing you annoys me.”

He waved me off, “I don’t need you to pick me up. I’m going to find Dad” and ran off.
I left, shattered, bought a ticket to my mom’s place, went home to pack, and was ready to leave.
