Chapter 41: Gemma Was Targeted, but She Could Handle It
Mabel had been standing nearby the whole time.
She had clearly overheard Dr. Wayn’s conversation with Marcus.
Gemma was the lead surgeon?
At her young age, she had saved Mr. Gray, who had been on the brink of death?
No wonder she was so surprised. Vascular foreign bodies were hard to spot even on a CT scan, which meant the object was tiny.
Even her former mentor wouldn’t have dared take on such a surgery.
Thinking about this, her face changed.
If Gemma kept progressing like this, she could soon make a name for herself in the medical field.
Then, even if Gemma wanted a divorce, the Wilsons wouldn’t let her go so easily.
She thought for a moment, and a cold shiver ran through her.
Instead of talking to Marcus, she turned and headed for the stairwell, dialing a number.
Gemma went straight to the doctor’s lounge. The surgery had been exhausting. As soon as she lay down, she fell into a deep sleep.
In her dreams, there was little angel Noah and the sweet, cuddly Candy. She woke up with a smile on her face.
When she opened her eyes, it was already early the next morning.
Glancing at her phone, she suddenly sat up, startled.

A call from the hospital director’s office!
Her hands were shaking as she tried to figure out how she could have offended the director.
She was just a small–time doctor!
Of course, now she had a bit more leverage, and could easily quit if she wanted to.
But she knew the upper circles weren’t that easy to navigate. She might have some money now, but who knew how long that would last.
So keeping her job was like putting on an insurance policy.
If she ever got, like, scammed, at least she’d still have a paycheck.
She quickly tidied up and rushed to the director’s office.
The director was extremely busy. After scheduling with the assistant, Gemma was finally able to meet the director at noon. To her surprise, as soon as she stepped inside, the director looked furious.
“You’re the one who saved Mr. Gray?”
Gemma hesitated for a moment before answering. “It was a team effort with some specialists guiding me.”
“Seems Dr. Wayn wasn’t wrong after all.” The director’s anger grew. “With your skills, why the hell would you want to transfer to the logistics department?”
Gemma was stunned.
She hadn’t asked for a transfer!

that, before, she’d been leaving work right on time to take care of Marcus and his son.
She could get her tasks done quickly, and some people weren’t happy about that.

Lindsay, who often stayed late, had even mocked her.
“If you’re in such a hurry to leave, why don’t you move to logistics? They don’t work in shifts there. You’ll never get extra hours.”
That was around the time the hospital had issued a new policy to accommodate doctors with physical issues,
Gemma hadn’t paid much attention to it.
But now she realized that Lindsay had filled out a transfer request on her behalf.
The director threw the already–approved transfer form into the shredder in front of her. “Be a damn good doctor! That’s the only thing you need to focus!”
“Understood,” Gemma breathed a sigh of relief.
If the form had gone through, she would have been forced to transfer, whether she liked it or not.
The director looked at her sharply, still stern
“Take good care of Mr. Gray. If he recovers, the hospital will give you your own column.”
Gemma’s heart raced with excitement.

“Good. Now go back to work.”
Gemma walked out, lightly patting her chest.
At first, she’d been scared. Now, she was thrilled.
Her heart was racing in her chest, out of control.
Back in the doctor’s office, it was time to hand over the shift.
Just in time, she ran into Lindsay.
Lindsay had worked the night shift and hadn’t slept at all due to an emergency patient. She looked drained.
But as soon as she saw Gemma, she perked up, a sly smirk crossing her face.
“Cutting it close again? Must be nice. But don’t worry, from now on, you’ll get to work normal hours like everyone else. You’ll be even happier.”
In the past, Gemma had felt guilty for not helping her colleagues with overtime. So she’d always put up with Lindsay’s snide
comments.
But now that she knew Lindsay’s true motives…
Life’s too short to keep putting up with people who don’t deserve it.
“It’s so natural for you to envy someone like me who gets things done, as you can not!”
“But don’t be like a toad in a well, complaining nonstop.”
Lindsay stomped her foot in anger, her eyes practically shooting flames.
“Gemma, you really don’t know when to quit, huh? You leave so early every day–when do you ever clean the office?” “People like you should go to logistics, where someone can keep an eye on you.”

But the office wasn’t even dirty–there was always a janitor. The most she ever had to do was take out the trash.

Gemma shrugged.
“If you spent less time praying for others to make room for you and more time improving your own abilities, maybe you’d get somewhere. But, you know… being ugly can be fixed, but a bad heart? That’s harder to change.”

Lindsay was fuming, her face turning red with anger.
“The logistics list is out,” someone nearby said, “It’s mostly people who were injured during the tornado relief efforts.”
“That’s fair. They can’t do surgeries anymore, so a change of scenery will be good for them.”
Lindsay immediately turned to grab a colleague. “Is it just them? What about Gemma?”
Her colleague blinked, confused. “Gemma is perfectly fine. Why would she need to go to logistics?”
Lindsay ground her teeth.
The transfer request she’d filled out for Gemma hadn’t been approved!
Her colleague looked like they suddenly realized something.
“Oh, right! The director told me to inform you–starting today, you’re being transferred to the branch hospital. Don’t forget to report there”
“What? The branch” Lindsay felt like the world was crashing down around her. “No way!”
The branch hospital didn’t have the same resources as the main one!
Her colleague shrugged. “Check your email. The appointment letter should be in your inbox.”
“I can’t accept this! Why is this happening to me?”
Her colleague sighed. “You can’t even finish a case right now. A stint at the branch could help you gain some experience.” With that, they turned and walked off, leaving Lindsay in a daze.
Lindsay felt like she’d been hit by lightning.
Was she the one being pushed aside now?
She had worked so hard!
Gemma walked over, her tone cold.
“Those who hurt others will always be hurt in return. Thank your for writing me that application. It’s a shame that I can’t repay your “kindness‘ as you’ll be in the branch soon!”
