bastard! No wonder you disappeared.” “Amelia, he’s been going crazy trying to find you. He even came to the hospital to interrogate me.” “But I honestly don’t know where you are, so it
was pointless.” “He’s been harassing all our
mutual friends too.”
“Tell him you don’t know,” I said.
“Don’t worry, I will. I won’t let him bother you.”
“But…Amelia, will you ever come back?”
“Of course. I have to finalize the divorce.”
“What if he refuses?”
I laughed. “It doesn’t matter. I’ll be traveling all
over. He won’t be able to find me. We can
just…wait it out.”
“His family won’t allow it. He’s their only son,
their heir.”
After the call, some of my colleagues invited me
for dinner. Mutton hot pot, the aroma filling the
air. In Beijing, my diet had been restricted. No
red meat. Too “heating.” But here, I embraced
the local cuisine, and my health had never been
better. The professor teased me, “You’ve got
such a healthy glow these days. You were so
<
pale when you first arrived.”
“It’s all thanks to you, Professor. I’m happy, I’m
eating well, sleeping well.” I held my bowl close,
leaning against her shoulder.
“Such a child. Act your age in front of your
juniors.” She playfully scolded me, but put a
large piece of meat in my bowl. “Eat up while
it’s hot.”
I took a bite, tears stinging my eyes. I quickly
finished the meat, hiding my face. Back in my
room, my old phone buzzed incessantly. Jason
seemed to have lost his mind, calling non–stop.
When he finally stopped, I sent him a text, my
first and last. “Sign the papers. I’ll be back to
finalize the divorce.” “Do not contact me about
anything else. If you do, I’ll disconnect this
number.”
He called immediately. I didn’t answer. He
didn’t call again. He just replied with one word:
“Okay.”
Jason leaned back on the couch, a hollow laugh
escaping his lips. His friends exchanged
glances, but no one dared to speak. He’d been
<
frantic these past few weeks. The news of his affair and Amelia’s disappearance had spread through their circle. Chloe hadn’t fared well. Apparently, the hospital visit was too late; she’d lost the baby. And Jason hadn’t let her off easy. She’d been expelled, her family had disowned her. Now she was clinging to the hope that Amelia would return so Jason would finally leave her alone. But Amelia had vanished
without a trace.
“Dude, was that…Amelia?” someone ventured.
Jason closed his eyes, silent. Then he spoke, his voice flat. “She’s really leaving me.”
The room fell silent.
“No way, man. You guys have been together for
so long.” “She’ll cool down. Just apologize. She’s got a soft heart. She’ll forgive you.” Jason shook his head. “You don’t know her.”
The door burst open, slamming against the wall. Everyone jumped, turning to look. Jason sat up,
his eyes narrowing. He let out a cynical laugh.
“Well, well. If it isn’t Ethan Carter.”
Ethan didn’t acknowledge anyone else. He
walked straight to Jason, kicked over the coffee
table, and grabbed him by the collar. No one
expected such force from someone so lean. He
yanked Jason up and slammed him against the
well.
“What? You want a fight?” Jason sneered.
Before he could finish. Ethan’s fist connected
with his face. “Jason. I told you five years ago.
If you hurt her. I wouldn’t let you get away with
it.”
Jason turned his head, blood streaming from
his nose. He wiped it away and swung back.
The room descended into chaos. Bottles
smashed. fumiture overtumed. Drunk and
disoriented. Jason was quickly losing. Ethan
knocked him to the floor. Both men were
bleeding. Jason’s face a mess. A deep gash
oozed blood on Ethan’s hand.
“Who the hell are you to interfere in my
marriage?” Jason spat, leaning against the
sofa.
“What? Heard we’re having trouble and decided
to swoop in?” “Too bad, Ethan. Five years ago,
