Chapter 6
After politely declining all offers of help and advice, I quietly made my way back home.
As soon as I walked through the door, the scene before me struck a deep chord of betrayal. Amelia was moving her belongings. into the house, while Maxwell and Milo were callously tossing out my possessions as if they were mere refuse.
Maxwell, upon noticing me, tilted his chin with an air of arrogance, his eyes brimming with disdain.
“Seraphina, this house belongs to Milo now, and we’re divorced,” he declared, his voice laced with venom. “Take your junk and get out. Stop intruding on our family reunion.”

The façade of tenderness he once wore had vanished, leaving only a raw animosity, as though my presence had been a burden he could no longer bear.
Milo stood beside him, equally condescending. “To live your life and end up like this–you really are a failure.”
With that, he pulled out a couple of hundred–dollar bills from his wallet, flinging them to the floor. “Here’s your support for the month. Take the money and leave. Don’t dirty our floors on your way out!”
The respect my son once had for me had turned to disdain.
Saying nothing, I gathered the bills and my belongings, then turned and left without a word.

I relocated to a dilapidated, vacant apartment. Though small, dim, and barely furnished, I managed to make it suffice. Alone, I led a life of simplicity and thrift. My meals were modest: stew with bread.
By
month’s end, I still had leftover funds from the two hundred dollars. I allowed myself a small indulgence, buying a steak. The aroma filled the room, enveloping me in a warmth I hadn’t felt in ages.
Just as I was about to enjoy my meal, Maxwell and Amelia arrived at my door with Milo in tow.
“This dump–does anyone actually live here? There’s not even a decent spot for… anything. A coffin would be bigger, sneered Amelia the moment she walked in.
Maxwell scrunched his nose in disgust.

“Seraphina, you have arms and legs. Why not work somewhere with room and board? You used to be the richest woman in the city, and now you’re stuck in this hovel. Isn’t this beneath you?”
“Even our bathroom is bigger than this place. How can you stand living here?” he queried.
I paid no mind to their jibes and continued eating my steak.
Spotting the dish, Milo narrowed his eyes, his tone dripping with judgment. “Wow, you’re eating steak? Seems like two hundred dollars a month is far too generous.”
Turning to Amelia, his voice was thick with sarcasm. “We should cut her allowance. She needs to grasp how hard it is to earn money nowadays.”

Amelia nodded in agreement. “My son is absolutely right.”
With a dismissive flick of his hand, Maxwell, visibly irritated, said, “Forget it. Two hundred dollars doesn’t even cover my socks. Consider it charity–just enough to keep her from starving. Otherwise, the online critics will start attacking us again!”
“Those imbeciles,” he muttered, seething. “It’s none of their business, yet they keep flooding my inbox with insults, as if I’ve committed some unspeakable crime.”
Milo, unfazed by the backlash, chuckled confidently. “Don’t worry, Dad. I’m about to marry Charlotte. Once I’ve secured her family’s fortune, we won’t need to worry about these digital harassers. From now on, you and Mom can just sit back and enjoy life!”

Hearing this, Maxwell’s mood lifted. “You’re right! Charlotte is the real deal–a self–made powerhouse. Her influence and wealth even eclipse our own Rodriguez Corp!”
you’re incredible! Better than I ever was. Winning over such an accomplished woman is no small feat.”
The day after transferring all my assets to my son, they wasted no time in renaming Nova Nexus Group to Rodriguez Corp.
