Mabel’s heart immediately tightened.
Today, Margaret had invited Marcus to dinner.
Truthfully, she hadn’t planned to bring Mabel along.
But Mabel had shamelessly tagged along, claiming Margaret still needed help.
After all, it had been a long time since she’d seen Marcus.
A woman’s intuition is sharp.
She could feel it–Marcus wasn’t as passionate toward her as he used to be.
It was highly likely he was already planning to break things off completely.
That was the last thing she wanted.
She hadn’t become Mrs. Wilson yet. Hadn’t gotten her chance to humiliate Gemma.
How could she be kicked out of the game now?
This time, she came with a purpose–to rekindle Marcus’s interest in her.
But she hadn’t expected Margaret to be so straightforward.
Margaret outright suggested that Marcus should just make things official with her.
Mabel quickly took a deep breath, putting on a shy yet gentle expression.
She was ready. The moment Margaret finished speaking, she’d deliver her rehearsed lines.

Before Margaret could finish saying she wanted Marcus to recognize Mabel as a sister, Marcus abruptly walked off, leaving the two women behind.

She grabbed Mabel’s wrist and followed after him.
Marcus stopped at the door of the private room. He could hear laughter inside.
“Brian, you actually have a history like that?”
“No way! You almost gave the wrong prescription to a patient?”
“Well, it was just almost. That was when I’d just started at the hospital. I think I’ve improved a lot since then, growing bit by bit.”
“When it comes to relationships, I’ll let fate decide. I won’t cling to the past, but I won’t rush into marriage again either.”
Marcus’s hand trembled as it rested on the doorknob.
The last sentence doused the fire of anger in his chest.
She said she wouldn’t rush into marriage.
Which meant she hadn’t fully let go of the past.
Which meant he still had a place in her heart.
There were misunderstandings between them, sure, but she wasn’t ready to reconcile.
If he did everything right, she’d come back to him.
Thinking this, he felt an unexpected sense of relief.
He turned the knob and opened the door.
Gemma and Brian assumed it was the waiter and paid no attention at first.
“Gemma, would you ever go back? I mean, I know Mr. Wilson is trying to win you back. He must still care about you.” Brian knew he shouldn’t ask, but he couldn’t help himself.
Gemma scoffed.
“Nobody wants expired trash.”
“Brian, let’s not talk about this anymore. It makes me sick.”
Trying to shift the topic, she added, “Strange, where’s the food?”

Both of them turned to look toward the door.
Marcus stood there, his face dark and brooding.
His eyes, cold and sharp.
It felt like a thousand arrows piercing through.
A moment ago, he’d been lifted to heaven, hearing her say she wouldn’t rush into marriage.
But the next second, her words about trash and bad luck dragged him straight into the depths of hell.
The emotional whiplash left him feeling like his chest had been ripped open.
His pain was running bone–deep!
“What are you doing here?” Brian’s expression soured as he stood up, clenching his fists.
It seemed that as long as Marcus took a step forward, he would directly strike.
“Max, did you walk into the wrong room?”
Mabel’s voice chimed in as she helped Margaret over. At first, she thought it was just a mix–up.
But as they got closer, she noticed someone familiar inside the room.
Mabel’s face darkened instantly.
“Oh, Ms. Kelestine and Dr. Jiang are here too.”
She forced a smile. “The roses are gorgeous! Is this…a date? Sorry to interrupt.”
Letting go of Margaret, she clung to Marcus’s arm.
“Max, let’s leave and stop bothering them. They look shy and awkward enough.”
Marcus didn’t shake her off, but his eyes stayed locked on Gemma.
“Are you two on a date?”
Brian stepped between them, refusing to let Marcus intimidate Gemma with his gaze.
“Mr. Wilson, whether we’re on a date or not, what’s it to you?”
Marcus grabbed Brian by the collar.
“She’s my woman!”
Brian didn’t retaliate immediately. “Mr. Wilson, the monarchy had been dead for over a hundred years. Women aren’t property. Ms. Kelestine is her own person, not your belonging.”
Marcus seethed. “Brian, don’t play the hero here. If you so much as lay a hand on her, I’ll destroy you.”
Brian snorted. “Oh, and you haven’t laid a hand on her? Considering the line of women waiting for your attention, you hardly have room to talk.”
His gaze flicked to Mabel, who flushed and quickly released Marcus’s arm.
“Dr. Read, you misunderstand. Max and I are just good friends. We were perfectly proper while he and Gemma were married.”
Brian smirked. “So now that they’re divorced, you’re no longer ‘proper‘?”
Mabel turned red with anger. “You–1”
Gemma, listening to their bickering, felt her mood sour completely.
She stood up and headed for the door.
Her eyes met Marcus’s, who looked at her with something close to desperation.
“Out of my way, asshole,” she said coldly.
Marcus’s hopeful expression froze.
Margaret exploded.
“Gemma! How dare you talk to Max like that?”
She raised her hand instinctively to slap her.
But the icy glare Gemma shot back made her pause.
For a moment, Margaret felt a chill run down her spine.
The once timid and weak Gemma now exuded an intimidating presence that made her hand tremble midair.
“Gemma.”
Marcus stepped in, lowering his voice, full of pleading.
“You always wanted me to take you to an auction, right? You said you wanted to experience it. I was always too busy before, but I’m free today. Want to go?”

Gemma frowned.

“Mr. Wilson, you win. I’ve lost my appetite. You’ve disgusted me enough for one day.”
Brian immediately chimed in.
“I know a dessert shop that’s pretty good. Let’s go and cheer up.”
“Yeah.” Gemma nodded. “I was thinking of hitting up an antique shop, maybe find myself a nice protective charm or something—something to keep all the bad vibes and nasty people away from me.”
