“I want you to promise you won’t have sexual relations in any form between now and Saturday and I want a medical
report in my hand ahead of our nuptials confirming you’re not carrying anything.” She saw the surprise on his face, “and
your lips will be nowhere near mine until I get it. I know what herpes are, Icaro, and I’ve never evens suffered a cold sore
in my life. I don’t intend to get them from a fiancé I don’t want.”
“Your mouth is something else.”
“You know what it is? Clean. It is clean. I want it to stay this way. I have treated my body, my soul, my spirit as a gift
bestowed to me by God. I have abided by the commandments set by His book. I have been a good and obedient
daughter. I have spent my entire life telling myself that when I finally gave myself, my body, my innocence to the man I would be spending the rest of my life with, he would be good, decent, and most importantly, never cause me harm. Did I
expect my husband to be a virgin? No but I’d hoped he was someone who was at least discerning in who he shared as
bed partners. I would never condemn someone who fell in love, was in a relationship and shared intimacy. However, I
never once dreamed I’d be paired with someone who outright demonstrated a lack of self control to the extent days
before our farce of a wedding, I’d be seeing him fornicating on the internet.”
“You really are a sanctimonious bitch.”
“Yes. I believe I have right to me.”
“I wasn’t fornicating on the internet.”
She pulled her phone out and pulled up the video which she and Sidonia found late Sunday night. “Are you sure?”
His eyes widened in disbelief as he looked at the video she played, volume up which drew the attention of onlookers. The moans and screams of the woman bent over the arm of a sofa filled the space and despite how much it made her cheeks
burn with embarrassment to be in possession of such things on her phone, she wanted him to understand she wasn’t
some doormat he was taking to the altar. She would sooner die.
“Where did you get this?” He ripped her phone from her hand and deleted the video furiously.
“It’s all over the internet, Icaro. The girl you were fornicating with put it on a website for amateur pornography. When I
saw it Sunday night it was already at a half million views.”
He was glaring at her. “How do you know about such sites?”
“I don’t actually. Sidonia looked up the name of the girls who were tagged in the stripper video and it took us to a link of
the pornography site where we found the video of you doing that.” Her mouth curled with disgust. In her heart she
believed such intimate acts should be done in the privacy of a bedroom not in a room full of other people. While there were only two people featured in the video, clearly someone else was holding the phone and camera and she could hear
other people laughing in the background.
“Why did you look up the girls?”
“I’m supposed to marry you on Saturday. The last thing I want is to be surprised by strippers at my wedding screaming
down the place in a misguided search for justice. I wanted to know who I was dealing with. I got more than I bargained
for.”
“Why did you download this to your phone?”
“Because I took it to my uncle in the hopes, he could find a way to call off our wedding.” Subconsciously she rounded her
shoulders and took a shallow breath as she recalled her uncle’s response. “I realized then, there was no way out
regardless of the devil I was marrying. I knew I would accept my death as a punishment for disobeying his command to
go through with my wedding.” Zorah forced herself not to cry. “I knew this was my last week on earth. I just wanted to
live a little before I died.”
“You would rather die than be my wife?”
“It is no life to be married to a man like you.”
“This,” he waved at the phone, “was a bachelor party and was supposed to be my last hurrah before our wedding.” He
conveniently left out the woman from the club today. “Someone took a liberty in recording and will be dealt with. I
apologize you saw it. Now, agree to our wedding.”
“Get your men and their guns out of my friend’s home.”
“You will agree to marry me Saturday and I will let her go.”
“Fine. Just prove to me she is there alone, and I’ll agree.”
“And no more talk of dying.”
“I will not speak of my death again.” She didn’t have to talk about it for it to happen. “I want the medical certificate from
you.”
“You do not get to demand.”
“I will marry you Icaro Lucchesi but without a medical document, we won’t be having marital relations.”
“We’ll be fucking Saturday.”
“We’ll add rape to your list of sins then?” she was bold and knew his anger was barely contained.
“Get up. Now.”
“No. If you’re going to kill me, do it now.”
“You are the most aggravating woman I’ve ever met.”
“Do you know what happens to good women who have devoted their entire lives to being loving, kind and dutiful when
the people who are supposed to protect them turn them into sacrificial lambs? They grow teeth. All of my life I lived
under the counsel of a family who declared themselves righteous and good only for them to throw me into the den of
iniquity like a sheep to slaughter. You might be able to force me to do many things, Icaro Lucchesi, but living isn’t one of
them.”
Evidently, he was tired of her arguing, and he snapped his fingers in the direction of two men who unceremoniously lifted
her from her seat and pulled her from the restaurant despite the dragging of her heels.
Outside in the cool evening air he followed at a leisurely pace ducking into the dark interior of the Escalade waiting
outside after she was shoved ahead of him.
“Where are we going?” she asked as the car pulled away from the curb in a rush.
“For a drive while I sort out whether I want to put you over my knee, fuck you silent or put a bullet in your head. It’s a
toss-up at this point but I’m leaning heavily towards the bullet.”
