“Anna, why are you only eating rice? Eat more of the vegetables; these are your favorite dishes, Frank said gently.
“I don’t like carrots or potatoes, and I can’t stand the taste of curry, I decided to be stubborn for once.
“How could that be? These are your favorite dishes,” Frank said, looking puzzled.
“I don’t like them anymore.”
“What’s wrong? Is your stomach not feeling well today? These dishes are really nutritious and good for your body,” he said, picking up a few pieces of food and placing them on my plate.

“Do you know Joanna?” I asked, trying to hold back the bitterness rising in my chest.
Seeing Frank’s momentary panic, my heart. sank.
“I don’t know her. Is she a new colleague of yours?” he asked, quickly pretending to know nothing.
“No, she’s an online friend,” I said, my voice flat.
Watching Frank sigh in relief, I began to believe Joanna’s words more and more.
“There are a lot of online scammers. Don’t pay attention to strangers” he advised.
“Got it,” I murmured, lowering my gaze.
After dinner, we settled on the couch to

watch TV, just like usual.
He chose a horror movie again–something I actually didn’t like, because I’m easily scared and can’t handle it.
But Frank always said that the more scared I was, the more I should watch them, to build courage, and when I hid in his arms, it would bring us closer together.
I believed him back then. But today, Joanna told me that Their favorite pastime before was watching horror movies together.
“I don’t want to watch a horror movie. I want to watch a comedy.”
“What’s this? Didn’t you used to love horror movies? When did you start liking comedies?” Frank asked, surprised.

“I never liked horror movies. You made
me start watching them. I’ve
always loved comedies, but you said they were stupid,” I said, my voice breaking as tears involuntarily filled my eyes.
“What’s wrong, Anna? Why are you crying?” Frank said, his eyes full of concern.
I couldn’t understand how someone who had shown me so much love could be lying to
- me.
Joanna had sent me so many messages, and I had only gotten through a quarter of them. I didn’t dare to read any more.
I was terrified that everything I believed in was a lie.
The sound of the doorbell broke the eerie silence.

I watched as the unfamiliar number flashed on the screen. Frank quickly grabbed his phone and hurried toward the study, calling out to me, “It’s a call from a new client. Don’t cry, okay? If you keep crying, it’ll break my heart.”
I knew it was Joanna calling. Her phone number had shown up when she added me as a friend.
He’d never hidden calls from me before, not even work calls. He’d always answered openly, sometimes even on speakerphone. But now, he had retreated to the study.
“Anna, I have an urgent document to deal with at the company. I need to step out for a while. You don’t need to wait up for me, just go ahead and sleep,” Frank said hurriedly.
