Chapter 4
He’d never been like this before. He always picked up my calls instantly. Even if he was busy, he would at least message me to let me know.
“Stop calling. Your husband’s busy bathing my pet dog, the message from Joanna flashed on my screen.
My heart twisted in pain, a deep, aching throb, like being pierced by a needle.
So, his phone was something he could casually give to another woman.
He had once told me his phone was only for me to see.
My parents was busy with work, I had to ask

the nurse to arrange for a caregiver.
The medication soon took effect, and I drifted back to sleep.
When I woke again, it was completely dark outside. Frank should have realized by now that I wasn’t at home.
I opened my phone and saw a message from Frank.
“Anna, I need to work late tonight. Go to bed early, don’t wait up for me.”
So, he was working late again.
I called him on video, but he quickly hung up and called me back with a voice message.
“Anna, I’m still working late tonight. Make sure to eat and take care of yourself,” Frank’s

gentle voice came through.
“Frank, I’m in the hospital,” I interrupted him.
“Anna, stop joking about your health. I’ve been taking care of you, and I know you’re fine,” he replied calmly.
I was about to tell him I had been in a car accident when suddenly, a woman’s urgent voice came through the line, “Frank, darling, Charlie suddenly threw up. We need to take him to the hospital right away.”
“Alright, Anna. Be good. I’ll be with you as soon as I’m done with work,” he quickly ended the call.
The changes in Frank these past few days had caught me off guard. I hadn’t expected him to change so suddenly.

Joanna sent me another message, this time of Frank holding the dog, a look of concern on his face.
“For Frank, my Charlie is more important than you.”
Charlie was Joanna’s pet dog.
I loved dogs too, but Frank had always said he was allergic to dog hair, so I gave up on the idea.
Now I knew that it’s because he didn’t want a second dog. Charlie was the only one that mattered.
Once I recovered a little, I discharged myself from the hospital. Frank still hadn’t visited and didn’t even know about the accident.
When I got home, the light that used to shine

for me was gone.
I called Frank, but it rang for a long time before he finally picked up.
“Frank, where are you?” I asked coldly.
“Anna, I’m still at the office working late. I’ll be back later,’ he said quickly, hanging up right after.
Now his excuses were getting more and more perfunctory–working late every day.
But when I asked his colleagues, they told me he’d been leaving the office early lately.
At that moment, Joanna sent me another message. She and Frank were having a candlelit dinner.
“Romantic things should be done with

romantic people. You’ve never had a
candlelit dinner together, have
Ou?”
She was right. We had never had one. Frank spoiled me in many ways, but he always thought candlelit dinners were too vulgar.
