Taking a deep breath, Jane sank into the car seat as Caleb sat beside her, minutes before the car started moving.
“Is everything alright? You look apprehensive” Caleb questioned when he noticed her uneasiness, but Jane only lowered her head.
“Y–Yeah, I’m fine.” Jane stuttered, avoiding
Caleb’s gaze.
“Don’t be nervous, we just have to show everyone we are married and we continue with our plans.”

“About that,” Jane paused for a while,
recollecting her words, “I don’t want to be introduced as your wife.”
Jane’s words took Caleb aback, and he asked, “Is everything alright?”
“Yeah, I just don’t want to be given preferential treatment,” Jane replied, rubbing her sweaty hands on her purple jumpsuit.

was the end of the discussion as he continued scrolling through his palmtop, however, Jane looked outside, through the window, her thoughts drifting far to her ex husband.

They arrived the gigantic skycrapper, some guards were outside already and they rushed to the car, opened the door and Caleb stepped out, adjusting his suit. Another man on suit rushed to him and quickly took his plamtop.

They greeted and he only nodded at them and started walking into the building. One of the

guards went to the car and brought out his briefcase and started following after him.
Jane stood in awe, watching as 12 men in suits and black shades escorted Caleb into the building while she lost, standing mesmerized. No one even paid attention to her and she had to race after Caleb.
The men stopped when he entered the executive elevator and Jane followed suit. The door to the elevator closed, leading straight to his office while the two remained silent in the
elevator.
Caleb kept a straight face, staring into space while Jane just stared at him, wondering how just one man would have so much power.

“Shall we?” He disrupted her thoughts when the elevator finally came to a standstill and they stepped out.
“Mr. Lockwood” Emily, his assistant rushed to him, bowed and took the briefcase from him, as the trio walked into a big office that would pass
for a living room.
They had to pass a small office which belonged to Emily, before getting to his office.
“Should I get you your coffee now sir?”

responded, sitting on his chair while Jane was

“Of course sir” she walked briskly to her office and returned later with some files, which she dropped on his table while he was busy going through his schedule.
“I’ll take my leave now sir” she bowed and turned to Jane gage her a blank stare, and just as she was about to leave, Caleb called out to
her.
“Emily!”
“Yes, Mr. Lockwood?”

“This is Jane Roberts, she would be my new assistant from now on, and you’re to teach her everything necessary. You’re dismissed”
Emily stood there motionless, surprised and vexed at the news as she turned to look at
Jane who held a blank expression as well. She wondered who Jane is that would make her
boss she had worked as his assistant for 3 years just relief her of her duty.
“Do you need anything else?” Caleb asked, looking up at her this time, making her stutter.
“No… Mr. Lockwood” she cleared her throat, feeling dejected.
“I said you’re dismissed. And you can start preparing her now” he added and started going

They walked out of the office, heading straight to an elevator. They got in and both ladies remained silent. Jane felt bored hearing the sound of the elevator with Emily standing next to her like a log of wood, her brows furrowed under her shades, and she wasn’t talking.
Jane cleared her throat and decided to speak.
“Hi, I’m Jane Rob-”

“I know who you are and I heard what he said, just follow me.” The brown–haired lady snapped. The elevator came to a standstill and she got out first, then began heading to the software development department.
Jane fought to catch up with Emily, it was obvious Emily was angered that Jane had taken her job from her and chose not to hide it.

“Spare me the pretense, Jenna, or whatever you are called. We all know that no one as dumb and slow as you could get this job without finding their way into the CEO’s bed.”

“Oh really? I’ve been working with him for the past three years. And you came out of the blue to take my position. Now tell me, did I do anything to warrant such?” Emily questioned, folding her arms across her chest.

Jane said nothing and was sknlu staring at her. Emily scoffed and nodded “Good”
She resumed walking while Jane followed behind her. “His favourite coffee is cappuccino, it should be ready by 9am.”
“His schedule should be sent to him first thing in the morning when he arrives. You’re expected to–”
“Wait, hold on… You’re going too fast and I think I need to jot some things down, I’ve forgotten most of what you said” Jane protested.

“Today’s lessons are done, Jenna.” Emily seethed and walked out on Jane.
“It’s Jane, not Jenna…” Sh mumbled under her breath, not minding that Emily didn’t hear her and was already walking away.
Jane’s stomach churned, as she stood, trying to avoid the deadly glares and murmurs coming from other employees, as she prayed for an earthquake to occur and swallow her whole.
“Hello, are you lost?” A dark–haired guy with green eyes walked up to Jane, offering his hand for a shake.
“Yes, and… Also no” she smiled, accepting the
handshake.

“That’s funny…” He smiled and glanced at Emily, almost running on her heels.
“What did you do to upset Emily? She doesn’t seem so happy?” He added, then turned to look
at her.
“I guess she hates me because I took her job” she breathed out.

He regarded her for a while, he regarded her in doubt, but still nodded.

“Wow! She’s one of the oldest workers that had retained their position here. I wouldn’t blame her if she gets cranky”
“Forgive my manners, I’m Brian” he offered his hand to her again, revealing a perfect dentition.

He was about to leave but noticed she wasn’t making any move to leave, and there was a worried expression written over her face.
“Please don’t tell me you’re upset because of Emily Milburn?”
“Not really… I can’t just find my way back to the office… I’m lost, actually” she confessed, making him smile.

first time.
“It will be my pleasure.” Jane’s cheeks bloomed like freshly picked roses, but that smile immediately disappeared when Xavier walked towards them.
Brian gulped down nothing down his throat with his brows forrowing into a frown and his fear visible. He quicky bowed his head to pay respect to Xavier, being too scared to meet his

“N–Nothing sir.” Brian stuttered, with his head still bowed as his eyes searched for nothing in the floor, and his feet unsettling with both hands behind his back.
“He’s taking me on a tour,” Jane answered, smiling, and when she turned to look at Brain, she noticed he was unease.
“Well, it’s good you’re already getting along perfectly. I’m sure you’ll enjoy your stay.” A little smile tugged at the corners of his lips before he walked past them and entered the elevator.
“Are you okay Brian?” She asked immediately he left, although his aura still hung the air.

“Let’s continue the tour,” he said hurriedly. Jane was confused, trying to sink in the scene that just occured.

“Can you come in some other time? I’m currently busy.” Caleb said hurriedly, covering the documents on his table, beads of sweat dropping down his forehead.
“I see you’re enjoying your new position” Xavier muttered, observing as Caleb appeared unease on the seat while going through some piles of documents. Caleb ignored him as he was too engrossed with what he was doing.
When Caleb didn’t respond to him, he resumed talking.
“I’d love to ask what you’re hiding, but that’s not my business,” Xavier spoke, walking around his office.

“I just miss this place you know? The feeling of knowing that you control lots of power and people. You must be enjoying that, right?”

“Fine. I noticed Jane was introduced as just a new staff member and not your wife.” Xavier
stated.
“That’s her decision. She doesn’t want the preferential treatment that comes with being the CEO’s wife.” Caleb explained.
